DURHAM, N.C.—It has been nearly 11 months since the Duke men's lacrosse team has officially taken the field. However, the wait is almost over as head coach
John Danowski has announced the highly anticipated 2021 schedule.
The unanimous choice as the nation's preseason No. 1 team, Duke will host eight games in Durham, while traveling six times. Unique to this season, the ACC will not host a postseason tournament, but instead play a pair of conference opponents twice. For the Blue Devils, that will be Notre Dame and North Carolina.
In all, Duke is slated to meet six teams in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Men's Preseason Top 20, including five in the top 10.
The Blue Devils open the season Feb. 5 with a top-10 matchup as they host preseason No. 7 Denver. Duke has won the past three games against the Pioneers, including last year's 15-13 thriller in the Mile High City.
Duke caps its busy first weekend with a Sunday game versus Robert Morris. It will be the first meeting between the two teams. The Blue Devils remain in Durham the following Saturday against Mercer before hitting the road for the first time at Towson, Feb. 20.
It's back-and-forth over the course of the next three weeks for the Blue Devils, traveling to Richmond March 5 and hosting High Point two days later.
Duke and Richmond have met have met six times since the inaugural meeting in 2016 and each of the past two outings have been single-goal victories for the Blue Devils. In 2020, a
Sean Lowrie overtime tally lifted Duke to a thrilling 16-15 victory. Duke wraps up non-conference action March 14 at Jacksonville.
Duke will get the chance to take a breath with an extended break before heading into the gauntlet that is the ACC. After 13 days without a game, the Blue Devils open league action hosting preseason No. 2 Syracuse March 27.
The late March matchup with the Orange is sure to be a must watch. Five of the past six games have been decided by a single goal with three of them going to overtime. Duke looks to snap a four-game losing streak against the Orange.
Four days later, Duke welcomes Tobacco Road rival North Carolina to Koskinen Stadium for a Thursday night matchup under the lights.
The Blue Devils' first ACC road trip of the year is the longest as it travels to take on No. 10 Notre Dame – a team the Blue Devils haven't lost to in the regular season since 2016. The two-game road swing continues in Charlottesville with a Thursday night tilt against the Cavaliers.
Duke will look to make it 15 straight regular season victories against Virginia, dating back to 2004. Overall, the Blue Devils are 18-2 versus the Cavaliers under Danowski.
The final two games of the regular season will be repeat matchups against Notre Dame (April 22) and North Carolina (May 2).
Duke is returning 92 percent of its scoring from an offense that averaged 15.25 goals per game, while the entire defense from 2020 remains intact. The Blue Devils also welcomed the addition of six graduate student transfers, including 2020 Tewaaraton favorite
Michael Sowers.
