Jones Named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club today named Duke sophomore midfielder Sophie Jones to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Presented by World Wide Technology, the MAC Hermann Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. The trophy watch lists are compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America committees.
A native of Menlo Park, Calif., Jones appeared in all 13 games during the fall season, averaging over 75 minutes per contest. In the season opener at Wake Forest on Sept. 10, she assisted on two Marykate McGuire goals – the first of which tied the game with under four minutes left and the second won it in overtime. A key component in the midfield for Duke throughout the season, Jones' fall campaign was capped off with All-ACC First Team honors. After starting both games in the ACC Tournament in November and helping Duke knock off fifth-ranked Clemson in the quarterfinals, Jones became the first Blue Devil to be named to the All-Tournament team since 2017.
The presentation of this year's MAC Hermann Trophy was pushed back to accommodate the seasons affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fifteen semifinalists will be named for both the men's and women's trophy at the end of April based on voting by Division I coaches and from those candidates, three finalists will be determined for the coveted award. Winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
Jones is seeking to become the first Duke player to win the MAC Hermann Trophy. She is one of seven players representing an ACC program named to the watch list. Of the trophy's 31 winners since 1988, 12 have come from the ACC.
Five Blue Devil alumnae over the past nine years have been named semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy – Natasha Anasi (2012), Christina Gibbons (2016), Imani Dorsey (2017), Quinn (2017) and Kayla McCoy (2018).
