DURHAM – Duke softball has begun its fall ball slate with a 3-0 record and welcomes two more opponents to town this weekend, hosting East Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m., and UNC-Greensboro on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Devils pitching staff combined to allow just one hit over the 10-inning exhibition, defeating NC State, 6-1, Oct. 8. Five pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters, with starter and graduate student
Peyton St. George leading the way, striking out all six batters she faced swinging.
The offense was jump-started by a home run from junior
Kamryn Jackson, who hit a three-run blast in the second inning. From there, the Blue Devils capitalized on six Wolfpack errors, wreaking havoc on the bases, with 13 different players reaching base in the win.
St. George was followed up by two more shutout innings from sophomore
Jala Wright, who struck out three more batters. Senior
Shelby Walters and sophomore
Lillie Walker locked down the victory with two scoreless innings each, adding three more strikeouts.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
After an historic 2021 season that saw the program's first ACC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, the Blue Devils will open exhibition play this fall. Head coach
Marissa Young is back for her fifth season at the helm of the program, following a program-best 44-12 record last season.
Several members of the championship squad are back, including all four All-ACC honorees from a year ago. The first NFCA All-American in program history,
Deja Davis, is back for her senior year after hitting .389 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, seven triples and 14 stolen bases. Outfielder
Jameson Kavel is back as a graduate student, after earning All-ACC First Team honors following posting a .320 batting average, four home runs and 33 RBI over 56 games.
The decorated pitching duo of graduate student
Peyton St. George and senior
Shelby Walters is back to headline an experienced pitching staff. St. George was the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, All-ACC First Team honoree and pitched to a record of 18-8, with a 2.21 ERA over 158.2 innings, while striking out 199. Walters was equally effective, going 19-3 with a 1.28 ERA over 147.2 innings pitched, collecting 87 strikeouts.
