DURHAM – The Duke softball program continued its fall ball success by taking a pair of five inning games over Campbell, winning 7-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two on Friday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
With the pair of abbreviated wins, the Blue Devils are 7-0 in fall ball with four shutouts and have outscored opponents 56-3.
The Blue Devils hit five home runs over two games, limiting the Camels to just three hits all night.
GAME ONE
Behind three home runs, the Blue Devils offense cruised to a 7-0 win over the Camels. The game began quickly, as senior
Kyla Morris opened with a single and stole second base. The next batter up was graduate student
Jameson Kavel, who blasted a two-run home run to right-center field to take a 2-0 lead.
Much like the bottom of the first, the bottom of the second saw two more runs. After back-to-back singles from seniors
Deja Davis and
Kristina Foreman, Davis was able to score on a throwing error by the Campbell catcher to make it 3-0. Kavel managed to make it back to the plate and added her third RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The runs kept coming as the Blue Devils tacked on three more in the third inning. After a single from sophomore
Kelly Torres, senior
Caroline Jacobsen hit another home run, this time sneaking over the left field fence to take a 6-0 lead. Foreman would go back-to-back with Jacobsen, wrapping her home run around the left field foul pole to take a 7-0 lead.
Sophomore
Claire Davidson and senior
Shelby Walters kept the Camels in check, pitching five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Davidson earned the start and allowed just one base runner on a walk over three innings.
GAME TWO
The two teams got out to strong starts in the circle, with sophomore
Jala Wright opening the game. Wright continued her scoreless streak with three innings of work, striking out four while allowing only one hit.
Wright was able to navigate around the only extra-base hit of the day for the Camels, a double in the second inning. Wright secured a ground ball out and caught the final batter looking to keep the game scoreless.
Freshman
Kelsey Zampa helped break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, launching her first home run into left field to take a 1-0 lead. The lead was more than enough for graduate student
Peyton St. George, who took over for Wright and struck out four of the six batters she faced over two hitless innings.
For added insurance, junior
Felise Collins hit one of the deepest home runs of the fall, blasting a solo home run well over the camera well in center field in the fourth inning.
The Blue Devils will be back at Duke Softball Stadium for the first annual alumni game at 1 p.m., on Saturday, before heading out on the road for a trip to Elon on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m.
