DURHAM – No. 4 Duke suffered its first home loss of the season as the Blue Devils fell in double overtime to NC State, 2-1, on Thursday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Jameese Joseph scored with 19 second left in the second overtime period, lifting the Wolfpack (5-6-2, 1-4-1 ACC) to their first win in ACC play. Duke (8-2-1, 2-2-1 ACC) outshot NC State 21-6 and fought for multiple scoring opportunities in the latter stages of the game, but it could not find the go-ahead goal down the stretch.
"We have to look in the mirror now and say, 'We are not playing as well as we were playing before,'" head coach
Robbie Church said. "Now, what is that – is that lack of focus, lack of concentration? We gave balls away way too much today. We had really good opportunities to score goals, and we have to score goals."
After going into halftime knotted at 0-0, the Blue Devils struck first in the 48th minute on graduate student
Tess Boade's fourth goal of the season. Senior
Mackenzie Pluck regained possession for Duke in the attacking third and raced towards the top of the 18-yard box before dishing the ball to Boade in stride. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native was able to get a step ahead of an NC State defender and slipped her right-footed shot between the legs of goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta.
Pluck picked up an assist for the third consecutive game and owns a team-leading five helpers this season.
NC State responded just four minutes later, as a corner kick cleared out by the Blue Devils made its way to Emika Kawagishi on the right side of the box. Kawagishi played in a high cross that found Annika Wohner, who one-timed it past
Ruthie Jones and into the right side of the net to level the score at one apiece.
Each team landed chances at the go-ahead tally, but the Blue Devils sustained more offensive pressure in the final moments of the second half. Boade and freshman
Michelle Cooper, who returned to the lineup after missing the past three games, led the way with five shots each, but none made it by Echezarreta.
The first overtime period yielded zero shot attempts for both teams, but Duke was called for two of its 14 fouls on the night.
Sophomore
Nicky Chico nearly ended things just 26 seconds into the second overtime frame when she was played a beautiful cross from senior
Delaney Graham that landed just outside of the goal box. Chico was able to redirect the ball towards goal with her chest, but Echezaretta adjusted in time to make her third and final save of the match.
Joseph's game-winner came on the heels of numerous opportunities around the box for Duke. The Wolfpack defense warded off every attempt and cleared a long ball towards the center of the pitch that Joseph took in stride. The speedy forward raced towards goal with the clock winding down and dribbled past two Duke defenders at the top of the box before tucking her shot between the outstretched arm of Jones and the right post.
The Blue Devils look to get back in the win column when they host Pittsburgh (8-5-0, 1-4-0 ACC) on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
