DURHAM, N.C. – Four members of the Duke track & field team will compete at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va., this weekend, while senior
Leigha Torino will run at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils will be represented at a meet hosted by Virginia Tech for the fourth time this season. Duke has competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational (Jan. 15-16), the Hokie Invitational (Jan. 22-23) and the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet (Feb. 5-6).
Duke's weekend begins with redshirt-senior
Ben Beatty competing in the men's weight throw on Friday at 5 p.m. ET. The Fredericksburg, Va., native has posted a top-10 result in each of the three weight throw events he has taken part in this indoor season. His seasonal-best of 17.44 meters (57-2.75 feet) came at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite meet. That mark currently ranks 16th in the ACC. Beatty holds the Duke indoor school record of 19.08m (62-7.25).
Freshman
Moorea Mitchell will compete in the women's weight throw on Friday at 7 p.m. Mitchell made her collegiate debut two weeks ago in Blacksburg, where she recorded a throw of 15.53m (50-11.5) for ninth in the event. The distance ranks 19th in the ACC heading into the weekend.
Sophomore
Brynn King gets Saturday started for the Blue Devils when she lines up for the women's pole vault at 11:30 a.m. King has been one of Duke's most consistent performers this season, as she has placed in the top-10 in each of the five pole vaults she has competed in. In her collegiate debut on Jan. 9, she earned first place with a mark of 4.00 meters (13-1.5 feet). She posted a PR the following week in her first competition in Blacksburg by clearing 4.22m (13-10.0). That height, recorded at the Virginia Tech Invitational, stands at fourth in the ACC and 17th in the NCAA this season.
Beatty returns to Rector Field House for the men's shot put at 12 p.m. He broke the school record at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet two weeks ago, when he recorded a mark of 18.42m (60-5.25). That PR is fourth in the ACC and 30th in the nation this season.
Mitchell and sophomore
Kinsie Huggins will wrap things up for Duke at 1:30 p.m. when they aim for new PRs in the women's shot put. Huggins posted Duke's best mark this season in the event when she placed eighth at the "Doc" Hale Elite Meet with a distance of 13.02m (42-8.75). Mitchell's best mark of 11.45m (37-6.75) came at the same meet.
Torino aims to build on her recent success when she lines up for the women's 800m at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday. The native of Citra, Fla., clocked a PR time of 2:07.78 at last week's Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson, S.C., which marked the best time by a Blue Devil this season. She has run in three 800m races during the 2021 indoor campaign, with results of first, seventh and sixth overall, respectively.
The meets serve as the final regular-season indoor events before Duke gets ready for the ACC Indoor Championships next weekend.
