DURHAM, N.C. – No. 18 Duke opened its 2021 home slate and conference action with a dominating 9-0 five-inning victory over Pittsburgh on Friday evening at the Duke Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 5-0 on the season and start league play at 1-0 while Pitt falls to 0-3 and 0-1. Senior pitcher
Brianna Butler notched her second victory of the season (2-0), throwing a one-hitter in which she struck out five batters through four innings in the circle. Freshman
Claire Davidson also made an appearance on the mound, tossing one frame in relief in which she retired the final Panthers' side.
Seniors
Jameson Kavel and
Rachel Crabtree both went 2-for-3 in the contest with three and two RBIs, respectively. Kavel's trio of runs driven in tied a career high and pushes her to season total to seven. Eight different Blue Devils registered a hit in Duke's season-high 10 hit game, including freshman
Kelly Torres who sent an RBI single up the middle for her first career tally.
Junior
Deja Davis got the bats going early for Duke, starting the afternoon with a leadoff single through the right side. Crabtree notched her first single of the day as she and Davis were brought home on Kavel's two-run hit to give Duke an early 2-0 lead.
The Panthers went down in order in the bottom half of the first before the Blue Devils plated two more runs on three hits in the second. Junior
Caroline Jacobsen singled, followed by graduate student
Dominique Salinas with a double to left field. Torres used her first career hit to score Jacobsen while Davis brought Salinas home on a sacrifice fly (4-0).
Duke's explosive five-run third inning sealed its first run-rule feat of the season. The Blue Devils produced back-to-back doubles with junior
Kristina Foreman and Kavel before Duke drew four walks to bring home two more. Freshman
Francesca Frelick made her career debut as a pinch hitter, drawing one of four walks in the frame while recording her first RBI. Crabtree's two-run single plated the final runs of the contest at 9-0.
Freshman
Sarah Goddard entered the game in the fourth and picked up her second hit of the season, Duke's 10th of the game, with a single to right field.
Duke returns to action tomorrow with a pair of games, beginning with Pitt at 4 p.m. and its first of a three-game series versus Notre Dame.
