DURHAM, N.C. – Following a 4-0 weekend at the Gamecock Invitational, Duke softball senior
Peyton St. George was selected as the ACC Pitcher of the Week and the Blue Devils continued their rise in all four national polls. Duke reached as high as No. 14 in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
The award marks the second pitching honor for St. George this season and the first solo weekly award for the program. Duke is now the highest ranked ACC program in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll as Virginia Tech and Florida State follow at No. 15 and No. 16, respectively.
The Blue Devils moved up a spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, checking in at No. 15. Duke improved three spots in both D1Softball and Softball America polls, slotted at No. 18 and No. 20, respectively.
The Mechanicsville, Va., native went 2-0 at the Gamecock Invitational, hurling 10 innings in which she tallied 14 strikeouts, while only letting up three hits and one earned run for a 0.70 ERA. St. George threw a complete game shutout versus Longwood, allowing just one hit and a walk while registering eight strikeouts. She garnered the win against No. 18 South Carolina, pitching five innings in which she recorded six K's en route to her fourth win of the 2021 campaign.
All of Duke's victories over ranked opponents in program history have come with St. George in the circle – No. 4 Texas (1-0), No. 5 LSU (8-4) and No. 18 South Carolina (5-1).
Following weekend action, the Blue Devils improved their overall record to 12-1 (4-1 ACC). Duke opened the weekend with two run-rule shutouts on Saturday, defeating Seton Hall (8-0) in six innings and Longwood (9-0) in five. The Blue Devils closed the weekend with their second win over Seton Hall (6-1) and second victory over a ranked opponent in 2021 as Duke defeated No. 18 South Carolina (5-1).
Duke is set for two midweek contests, beginning at Charlotte tomorrow at 6 p.m. and home versus NC Central on Thursday, March 4, at 6 p.m.
