DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's soccer team will join together to watch the NCAA women's soccer selection show on Monday, April 19 at 1 p.m. ET, expecting to earn the program's 26th all-time NCAA tournament bid.
The selection show will be aired live on NCAA.com, revealing the field of 48 teams that will compete in the tournament beginning Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28. In an effort to minimize travel and condense the overall time to conduct the championships, the entirety of the NCAA tournament will be played in North Carolina.
The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 8 in the NCAA RPI, after totaling a 10-5-3 overall record and 4-4-2 mark in the ACC this season. Duke's two wins over Clemson in the fall – with the Tigers ranked in the top five in each match – as well as a 0-0 draw with 14th-ranked Vanderbilt on Sunday, April 11 put the Blue Devils in strong position to hear their name called for the sixth consecutive tournament.
With the NCAA tournament postponed from the fall of 2020 to the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke completed a five-match slate over the last six weeks, accumulating a 3-1-1 record.
The Blue Devils have been fueled by a balanced offensive attack, with 11 different players scoring a goal this season. Unselfish play has also been prevalent throughout the 2020-21 campaign, as Duke's 32 assists rank second in the ACC and tied for 13th in the nation. Freshman
Olivia Migli (six goals), senior
Tess Boade (five goals, two assists) and junior
Marykate McGuire (three goals, six assists) are tied for the team lead with 12 points each.
On the back end, Duke boasts a veteran group of defenders that includes senior team captain
Caitlin Cosme, who has earned two ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors while registering five goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder
Sophie Jones, who was tapped to the All-ACC First Team in the fall and added to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List in January, has showcased her offensive abilities over the last five games, netting two goals and an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ruthie Jones has emerged as one of the best in the conference at her position this season. The most recent ACC Defensive Player of the Week has recorded 43 saves, and her eight shutouts rank second in the league.
The Blue Devils are led by head coach
Robbie Church, who holds a 254-131-58 record in his 20th season at Duke.
