DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team fell to No. 22 Notre Dame 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 22-25) Friday evening at O'Keefe Gym in Atlanta, Ga.
The Blue Devils (9-12, 7-9 ACC) were led by junior
Ade Owokoniran with a season-high 19 kills behind a .213 hitting percentage while junior
Lily Cooper brought in nine for a .350 clip. Setters
Alex Springate and
Camille Nazor dished 20 and 19 assists, respectively, while libero
Mackenzie Cole picked up 26 digs.
"Notre Dame is an excellent team that doesn't make a lot of errors," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "Our team executed at times today at a very high level, which is exciting! We need to continue those great things and eliminate some errors so that we can better control our destiny."
Offensively, the Fighting Irish (14-3, 13-3 ACC) tallied a .248 hitting percentage for the match as the Blue Devils were limited to .167. Notre Dame, who ranks fourth in the ACC in blocks, registered 25 total blocks tonight to Duke's 10.
Duke came out hot offensively to start the contest with 16 kills and just four errors to hit .279 percent as Owokoniran reeled in six quickly to help lead Duke to a first-set victory.
The Blue Devils still registered a solid hitting percentage (.216) but couldn't match Notre Dame's .394 percent in the second set.
Duke struggled offensively in the third and despite Owokoniran's seven kills in the fourth, the Blue Devils fell to the Fighting Irish. Duke held a 20-17 advantage in the fourth and what would become the final set, but Notre Dame used an 8-2 run to close out the last points of the match.
The Fighting Irish were led by Charley Niego with 15 kills and 15 digs while setter Zoe Nunez dished 39 assists.
Duke will close out the 2020-21 season Saturday against No. 23 Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. on ACCNX.
