DURHAM – Twelve former Blue Devil men's lacrosse players have been selected to the 25-man rosters across seven of the eight teams in the Premier Lacrosse League. The PLL begins season three this Friday, June 4 at Gillette Stadium as the Cannons and Redwoods face off.
Former Duke midfielder
Myles Jones will be the first Blue Devil to take to the field in 2021, donning the Redwoods jersey for a second season. In 16 career games played, Jones has 31 points from 13 goals, including three two-pointers, and 15 assists.
The largest Blue Devil contingent returns to the Chrome as six of the team's players honed their skills in Durham. The group of five veterans –
Jordan Wolf, Ned Crotty, Justin Guterding, Will Haus and
Mike Manley – will suit up June 6 against Jones and the Redwoods. Newest member,
JT Giles-Harris will join the squad at a later date after completing his career with the Blue Devils last
weekend.
Brad Smith and the two-time reigning champ Whipsnakes open the 2021 campaign June 5 against Chaos.
Patrick Resch represents for the Blue Devils as a shortstick midfielder for Chaos. Smith made his PLL debut last summer, scoring 15 points from eight goals and seven assists in six games.
Also playing June 5 at Gillette Stadium will be defenseman
Cade Van Raaphorst for Atlas. In his third year in the league, Van Raaphorst anchors the Atlas defense and has 23 caused turnovers and 37 ground balls in his 14 games.
Amidst all the Saturday action on the field at Gillette Stadium, the Tewaaraton Foundation will hold its annual awards ceremony. Duke graduate student and Waterdogs draftee
Michael Sowers is one of the finalists for the player of the year award, which will be announced at halftime of the game between Chaos and Whipsnakes.
A pair of games close out the weekend as the Waterdogs take on the Cannons and the Chrome play Redwoods Sunday afternoon.
Deemer Class will be in a new uniform as a member of the Cannons. After missing last season to an injury, Class returns to the field with 13 points from 10 goals and three assists in his nine career games.
Closing out the opening weekend is the large contingent of Blue Devils on Chrome. Wolf and Guterding headline that offense after ranking tied for fifth and seventh in the PLL, respectively, in points.
They both had 10 goals in five games to rank tied for sixth in the league. In 15 career games, Wolf has 50 points off of 26 goals and 24 assists. Guterding, playing in 15 games as well, has 51 points from 29 goals, including one two-pointer, and 21 assists.
Crotty, one of Duke's all-time great passers, tied for fifth last season with seven assists. A 14-game veteran, Crotty owns 37 career points. Manley is a veteran on close defense and had 13 ground balls and five caused turnovers in last year's bubble season, while Haus had nine and two, respectively, as a short stick midfielder.
The 2021 PLL season will consist of seven weeks of games in seven different cities with a one-week All-Star break in San Jose, Calif., at PayPal Park.
