TOKYO – Two Duke University women's golf graduates – Leona Maguire and Celine Boutier – opened the Tokyo Olympics Wednesday at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kawagoe, Saitama, Japan in blistering heat.
Maguire carded an even-par, 71, and is tied for 23rd overall, while Boutier signed for a 2-over, 73, and is tied for 41st.
In her second appearance in the Olympics, Maguire opened her day with seven pars, one birdie and one bogey on the front nine as she made the turn at even-par, 36. After a bogey on No. 11, she closed strong with a 1-under-par ledger over the final five holes to finish at even for the day. Maguire rolled in three birdies on the day.
Boutier featured one of the best starts of the morning with three birdies over her first six holes and was 2-under-par through eight holes. She closed with four bogeys over her final 10 holes to finish with a 73.
Madelene Sagstrom holds the individual lead with a 5-under, 66.
Maguire will tee off in the second round beginning at 8:47 p.m. EDT tonight, while Boutier will open action at 7:03 p.m.
