DURHAM – Duke graduate student
Tess Boade was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and junior
Ruthie Jones was tapped the Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to a 1-0 win at No. 2 North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 17.
Duke becomes the first team to sweep the conference's weekly awards this season. Jones picks up her second career ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor after earning the recognition on April 13, 2021, while Boade receives Offensive Player of the Week status for the first time.
The pair was instrumental in helping the fourth-ranked Blue Devils beat North Carolina for the first time since 2015 on Friday night. Boade put Duke in front in the 55th minute with her third goal of the season, finishing off a pass to the front of the net from freshman
Michelle Cooper. It was the 17th career tally for the Highlands Ranch, Colo., native and her eighth game-winner. With the goal, Boade broke a scoreless streak for Duke in the Tobacco Road rivalry that extended back to Aug. 18, 2017 (six games).
Jones was impenetrable in goal for the Blue Devils, making six saves to hold the Tar Heels scoreless for the first time in their last 27 games dating back to December of 2019. She came up with three stops in the first half, none bigger than denying a header from Avery Patterson off a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Jones earned her second complete shutout of the season and improved to 10-0-2 over her last 12 starts. The six saves were a season high for the Charlotte, N.C., native, who now has 19 saves with a 0.47 goals against average this year.
The honors mark the first time the Blue Devils swept the ACC's weekly awards since Oct. 20, 2015, when
Imani Dorsey was tapped the Co-Offensive Player of the Week while
Christina Gibbons earned Defensive Player of the Week.
Boade and Jones were also named honorable mention for the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
Duke (7-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) faces another top-10 road test this week as the Blue Devils travel to No. 7 Virginia (8-1-0, 1-0-0) on Thursday, Sept. 23. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
