DURHAM – The Duke rowing team is pleased to announce the addition of 14 student-athletes who are joining the program as walk-ons.
After a week-long tryout period that included running, swimming and indoor rowing machine workouts as well as a physical examination, the 14 student-athletes were selected to be a part of the 2021-22 Duke rowing roster.
"I am so excited to be working with this year's walk-on class," assistant coach
Matt Carlsen said. "Rowing is a sport where you can start at any time and 13 out of the 14 walk-ons have never rowed before. With that being said, I have already seen glimpses of so much potential and they all have improved greatly over just a handful of water practices. A wise person once said 'Big dawgs gotta eat,' and they continue to keep eating up the meters every day and asking to do more. As they keep putting in the work, the gain train will keep getting bigger!"
This season's walk-on group consists of five freshmen, five sophomores, two juniors, one senior and one graduate student. Five of the 14 student-athletes are North Carolina natives, including senior
Anne Crabill, who competed for the Duke women's lacrosse program in 2019 and 2020 after attending Chapel Hill High School.
"I am thrilled to join the rowing team and compete for an ACC championship this spring," Crabill said. "The team, coaching staff and support staff have been so welcoming, and I could not be more honored to represent Duke as a rower."
With the 14 new additions, the Duke rowing roster is currently made up of 64 student-athletes.
"I am so excited to be a part of the Duke rowing team," sophomore
Anika Pawlak said. "This is such a high energy team, and I feel like there will always be an abundance of motivation, encouragement, and drive. I can't wait to grow with this team over the next three years – reaching goals on the water and forming relationships off. I'm so thankful for this opportunity and I look forward to seeing all that this team can achieve."
"I am so incredibly excited to be a part of such a wonderful team," freshman
Kaitlyn Roegner said. "I am blown away by the commitment, determination and sense of community from the athletes, and I absolutely love our coaching staff! This is an amazing opportunity and I am so blessed to be a part of Duke rowing."
