NEED TO KNOW
- No. 2 Duke faces another top-10 road test in the ACC as the Blue Devils square off with No. 7 Virginia in Charlottesville on Thursday, Sept. 23.
- The match is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra with James Travis and Paddy Foss on the call.
- Duke's 7-0-0 start to the season marks the second time in program history and the first time under head coach Robbie Church that the Blue Devils won each of their first seven matches.
- The Blue Devils are coming off their first win over North Carolina since 2015, as Duke defeated the Tar Heels 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 17 in Chapel Hill.
- Duke moved up to No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll, marking the Blue Devils' highest ranking since 2017.
- Graduate student Tess Boade was named the ACC Player of the Week after netting the game-winner in the 55th minute at UNC. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native now has three goals with two assists this season.
- Junior goalkeeper Ruthie Jones earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors in recognition of her six-save shutout at North Carolina. Jones is 10-0-2 with 6/2 shutouts over her last 12 starts dating back to April of 2021.
- Freshman Michelle Cooper is the first player in program history with six goals over her first six career games. She has also dished out three assists, including a helper on the game-winner at UNC.
- Cooper currently leads the ACC in shots per game (4.9) while ranking second in total shot attempts (34) and tied for seventh in both goals (6) and points (15).
- With their 5-0 win over East Carolina on Sept. 9, the Blue Devils finished the non-conference schedule with zero losses and zero ties for the first time in program history.
- Duke is 8-3-0 in its last 11 road games dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season and has outscored opponents 21-9 in that stretch.
DUKE VS. VIRGINIA
- Duke takes on one of its oldest ACC rivals on Thursday night as the Blue Devils and Cavaliers are set to battle for the 45th time since 1989.
- The 44 prior matches between the two make Virginia the second-most common opponent in Duke's program history, only surpassed by the 49 contests between Duke and North Carolina.
- The Blue Devils trail the all-time series, 16-19-9, but have gone 3-2-2 in their last seven matches against UVA dating back to 2016.
- Duke is 6-10-4 all-time in Charlottesville and is looking for its first road win against the Cavaliers since Oct. 27, 2017. That win was followed up with another victory in the ACC semifinals a week later, as the Blue Devils bested Virginia 1-0 in Charleston, S.C., to advance to the championship match.
- The most recent meeting saw the two teams battle to a 1-1 draw after two overtimes on Sept. 17, 2020 at Koskinen Stadium. That match, which was played in a torrential downpour, was the first start in Ruthie Jones' career at Duke. The junior has started 27 consecutive games since then.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
- Virginia brings an 8-1-0 record into Thursday night's match and is coming off a 1-0 win at Wake Forest in its ACC opener on Sept. 17.
- The Cavaliers began the season with a 6-0-0 record and moved up to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll before falling to Penn State, 4-2, on Sept. 9 at Klöckner Stadium.
- Steve Swanson's team has outscored its opponents 25-6 this season and boasts a 19.9 to 5.4 advantage in shots per game.
- Junior Diana Ordoñez paces the Cavaliers offensively with eight goals and 16 points. Her eight tallies are currently tied for the ACC lead this season.
- 2020-21 All-ACC performers Alexa Spaanstra and Lia Godfrey have 10 points apiece, with Godfrey's six assists ranking second in the conference.
- Fifth-year goalkeeper Laurel Ivory has started eight of nine matches this season, collecting 15 saves to six goals against with four shutouts.
LAST TIME OUT: DUKE 1, NORTH CAROLINA 0
- The Blue Devils opened their ACC schedule with their first victory over North Carolina since 2015 on Friday, Sept. 17 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
- By beating the No. 2 Tar Heels, Duke earned its fifth all-time over an opponent ranked in the top two of the United Soccer Coaches poll.
- Junior Ruthie Jones made six saves in goal, including three key stops in the opening 25 minutes as North Carolina came out on the attack.
- With her second complete shutout of the season, Jones held the Tar Heels scoreless for the first time in their last 27 matches -- a stretch dating back to December of 2019.
- Duke broke through in the 55th minute when graduate student Tess Boade finished off a Michelle Cooper pass from the left side of the box. It was Boade's third goal of the season and her eighth career game-winner.
- Sophomore Olivia Migli picked up a secondary assist on the play, marking the first assist of her career.
- The Blue Devils fired seven shots in the second half with three on target.
- With the win, Duke improved to 5-0-4 in its last nine ACC openers dating back to 2013.
DUKE ON THE ROAD
- Duke earned its sixth win in its last seven road matches at North Carolina this past Friday.
- The Blue Devils are 8-3-0 in their last 11 road games dating back to the start of the 2020-21 season and have outscored their opponents 21-9 in that stretch.
- The six road wins last season were Duke's most since the 2017 campaign.
- The last time the Blue Devils opened ACC play with consecutive road matches was the 2018 season, when they earned a 4-0 win at Syracuse on Sept. 16 before beating Miami 2-0 on Sept. 20.
MOVIN' ON UP
- With their win at second-ranked North Carolina on Friday night, the Blue Devils moved up to No. 2 in the newest United Soccer Coaches national poll released Tuesday.
- The No. 2 ranking is the highest for Duke since Oct. 31, 2017, when the Blue Devils captured the program's third ACC regular season crown.
- Five of Duke's eight wins this season have come against opponents included in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings.
- In the NCAA's Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which is designed to rank teams based on their strength of schedule, Duke is currently rated as the No. 1 team in the nation.
- The Blue Devils also advanced to No. 3 in the most recent TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings after beginning the season at No. 7.
- Duke has been ranked in the top 10 in each of the last 21 United Soccer Coaches polls dating back to Oct. 6, 2020.
BLUE DEVILS SWEEP ACC WEEKLY HONORS
- Friday night's win at North Carolina yielded a pair of individual honors, as Tess Boade was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Ruthie Jones was tapped the Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
- Duke became the first team to sweep the conference's weekly awards this season.
- Jones nabbed her second career Defensive Player of the Week honor (April 13, 2021), while Boade received Offensive Player of the Week recognition for the first time.
- With her six-save shutout, Jones held the Tar Heels scoreless for the first time in their last 27 matches.
- Boade's game-winning goal in the 55th minute was her 17th career tally and her eighth game-winner.
- Both players were also named honorable mention on the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.
- The last time Duke swept the ACC weekly awards was Oct. 20, 2015, when Imani Dorsey was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week while Christina Gibbons earned Defensive Player of the Week.
