ELON, N.C. – Duke men's and women's cross country opened the season with a Friday night sweep at the Elon Opener, with each finishing first among the 12-team and 10-team field respectively.

No. 23 men's cross country finished with 20 points on the 6K course, 55 ahead of the next closest finisher East Carolina. Women's cross country took home first with 22 points on the 4K course, 15 ahead of the host Elon.

Sophomore
Charlotte Tomkinson took home top honors on the women's side, winning the race with a time of 13:32.4 to take home a first-place finish in a collegiate event for the first time. The Duke women took five of the top-10 individual finishes, with Tomkinson being joined by teammates
Clara Savchik (2nd – 13:33.8) and
Michaela Reinhart (3rd – 13:41.4) in the top-three. Senior
Elizabeth Reneau (6th – 13:59.0) and freshman
Katie Hamilton (10th – 14:09.6) rounded out the top-10.

The men's side turned in a strong display of pack running, with the Blue Devils taking 11 of the top-13 spots. Campbell's Athanas Kioko took home first place, with four Blue Devils rounding out the top-five. Junior
Zach Kinne led the way with a time of 17:56.5 to take second place, followed by graduate student
Nick Dahl in third at 18:02.0, junior
Sam Rivera in fourth at 18:04.1 and junior
Rory Cavan in fifth at 18:16.5.

With the wins, head coach
Angela Reckart secures her first two as a head coach. The women's side wins their first meet since the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Oct. 16, 2020, while the men are back in the top spot for the first time since the Hokie Open on Nov. 8, 2019.

The Blue Devils will continue their schedule in the state of North Carolina, as they prepare for the next meet at the Adidas XC Challenge, hosted by NC State in Cary, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 17.
