What is your favorite rowing memory?
MK: The feeling of crossing the finish line is unreal, especially when you're first. Then to top it off, the van rides with the team celebrating are the best. My favorite ride home was when we were in San Diego at the Fall Classic celebrating our win by singing to Beyonce in the car.
How did you get started in rowing?
MK: After a ski accident which left me with a torn ACL, I was unable to continue playing competitive tennis. I was looking to try something new and a family friend recommended being a coxswain since I was a freshman with a competitive spirit and high kinetic energy. I joined CBC, the first all-women's team in the country. It is a small competitive program in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Why did you choose to row at Duke?
MK: Duke is an amazing university with a great combination of academics and athletics. I am able to pursue my career ambitions and continue doing the sport I love. There is no place that supports their athletes as much and wants them to achieve their goals. The coaching staff has goals that align with mine which includes winning!
What stuck out to you about the team that made your decision to attend Duke feel right?
MK: There were many things about the team that made the decision for me. The amazing conversations I had with current team members showed me how intelligent and powerful these women are. I also was able to bond with many of the girls going into my class and met a few of them before we were committed which was really cool! Lastly, I loved the coaching staff and their energy made me excited to be a part of this team.
