DURHAM – Duke junior attackman
Dyson Williams scored four goals and 11 different Blue Devils registered a goal as No. 3 Duke cruised to a 17-7 victory over Manhattan Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Graduate student
Joe Robertson finished with two goals and two assists, while rookies
Keith Boyer and
Liam McLane notched their first career tallies in the victory. Overall, 14 different players posted at least one point and seven had multiple points.
Defensively, Duke held its second straight opponent to fewer than 10 goals, holding the Jaspers scoreless for over 15 minutes twice. Duke's close defense trio of
Will Frisoli,
Wilson Stephenson and
Kenny Brower combined for five caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Junior
Jake Caputo forced a pair of turnovers, while
Tyler Carpenter had two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Sophomore
Aidan Danenza opened the scoring 1:34 into the game, taking an
Andrew McAdorey pass for his second goal of the campaign.
Manhattan responded with a pair of tallies from Kyle Gucwa, while Jasper goaltender Brendan Krebs closed the door on the Blue Devils for the remainder of the quarter. Duke fired nine goals in the opening stanza and Krebs posted six saves.
Gucwa led Manhattan in the scoring column with four goals.
Krebs finished the first half with 12 saves and had 19 for the game. Duke fired 56 shots overall with 36 coming on cage.
The Blue Devil offense started firing on all cylinders in the second quarter, scoring six unanswered to go ahead 7-2 with six minutes remaining in the period. All six goals came off the sticks of different Blue Devils.
Manhattan ended the scoring drought at 18:21, cutting the lead to 7-3 at halftime.
Mike Adler made five saves in the first half, while Krebs had an impressive 12.
The Jaspers tacked on a fourth goal to start the third quarter, but it was all Blue Devils with seven of the next nine goals for a 12-6 lead heading into the fourth period.
Graduate student
Sean Lulley scored his second of the afternoon to open the fourth before McLane and Boyer put themselves in the scorebook with their first career markers.
Griffin Catlett provided the assist to McLane, while McAdorey capitalized on a Manhattan turnover.
Sophomore
Jake Naso and senior
Jordan Ginder combined to go 16-of-23 at the faceoff dot. Naso won 9-of-14 and picked up five ground balls, while Ginder was 7-of-9 with four ground balls.
Adler finished his day with seven saves in 53 minutes of action.
Garrett Smith and
Andrew Bonafede split the final seven minutes of action with Smith making a stop.
Duke returns to action Sunday against Jacksonville. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
