DURHAM – No. 13 Duke softball (11-3, 0-0 ACC) earned a split on day two of the Duke Invitational, defeating Army 13-1 in five innings, before falling to No. 19 Michigan in a tight 3-2 decision in the night cap.
Duke vs. Army
After throwing a no-hitter against the Black Knights (1-7, 0-0 Patriot League) on Thursday, the Blue Devils let the bats do the talking, scoring in every inning of the game.
Caroline Jacobsen started the day off with an RBI single that brought home another run on an error before
Kristina Foreman drove her home on a two-run blast to make it 4-0.
In the second inning,
Rachel Crabtree added her own home run, launching a two-run home run for a 6-0 lead. After Jacobsen added a double, Foreman picked up her third RBI of the day to extend the lead and
Claire Davidson drove her home for an 8-0 lead.
After Army added a run on a wild pitch,
Julia Boyet quickly reestablished the lead with an RBI single to go up 9-1. The Blue Devils would close the job in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with an RBI sacrifice fly from
Kyla Morris to take a 10-1 lead. Boyet picked up her second RBI on a sacrifice fly and
Gisele Tapia drove home two more to secure the 13-1 advantage.
In the circle, Davidson added her third win of the year, striking out three over three innings, while
Lillie Walker delivered two scoreless innings of relief, adding two more strikeouts.
Duke vs. No. 19 Michigan
The Blue Devils and Wolverines (7-4, 0-0 Big Ten) delivered a thriller in the finale, starting with two runs from the visitors in the first inning off an RBI foul out and a double from Hannah Carson.
Both sides settled into the game quickly, as
Peyton St. George went toe-to-toe with All-American Alex Storako of Michigan. St. George struck out two batters and kept the game within reach, before giving way to
Jala Wright after four innings, following a Michigan home run that made it 3-0.
Duke was able to respond in the bottom half of the fourth, as
Kelly Torres opened the inning with a walk before giving way to
Kelsey Zampa as a pinch runner. Zampa moved to second on a fielders choice and was opportunistic again, taking advantage of a Michigan error to score from second base and shave the deficit to two.
While Wright was delivering three more shutout innings, the Blue Devils put more pressure on Storako in the seventh inning. The Blue Devils got three straight singles from Tapia, Crabtree and Kavel, with the latter driving in pinch runner
Ana Gold to cut the lead in half and force Storako out the game. However, Meghan Beaubien came in and secured a save for Michigan, stranding the tying run at second base.
The Blue Devils will be back for two more games to conclude the Duke Invitational, hosting Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m., and the Wolverines for a second time at 4 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
