OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The No. 14 Duke rowing team wrapped up the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite by taking first place in each of its six races on Sunday, completing an 18-race sweep for the weekend on Melton Hill Lake.
"I'm proud of the whole team," said head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno. "I feel like they really started to think as 'Us' instead of 'I,' and it was noticeable. The amount of energy that they brought to each other across the whole regatta was noticeable. They did a very good job."
After going 12-for-12 on Saturday, the Blue Devils were able to carry strong momentum over to the final set of races. Duke's Third Varsity Four got Sunday off and running with a top time of 7:32.487, edging No. 16 Alabama's 7:34.450. The 3V4 grinded out each of its three victories throughout the weekend by less than four seconds.
The Varsity Eight followed that up by outpacing No. 20 Tennessee and Navy with a time of 6:26.453. Duke's top boat put together impressive winning times on Saturday and Sunday, holding off three ranked opponents in three separate races. The Varsity Four was next up, besting Navy and the Volunteers with a mark of 7:14.718.
After the 2V8 finished off its own sweep with a Sunday time of 6:38.785, the 2V4 posted the Blue Devils' largest margin of victory, besting second-place Navy by over 13 seconds (7:29.187 to 7:42.916). Duke's 3V8 cemented the weekend in strong fashion, outracing the Mids by nine seconds in the final race.
"I think they came into today knowing what business they needed to take care of and to not only be confident, but be ready," said Cooke Carcagno. "We showed our cards yesterday. We knew we were going to get some pretty tough matchups today, but I think that they handled that pressure really well."
Duke and Yale (12 races) were the only programs at the regatta to take first place in each race they competed in.
The Blue Devils will face more nationally ranked competition when they head to Columbus, Ohio for the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual on Saturday, April 2.
