DURHAM – The Duke fencing team is set for the 2022 NCAA Fencing Championship as seven Blue Devils will compete on the national stage. The championship is slated for March 24-27 hosted by Notre Dame at the Castellan Family Fencing Center in South Bend, Ind.
Duke will send
Danny Campbell III (men's epee),
Christina Ferrari (women's foil),
Catherine Flanagan (women's foil) and
Alex Gorman (women's saber),
Finn Hossfeld (men's foil),
Terence Lee (men's saber) and
Anneke Zegers (women's saber).
The 2022 campaign marks the 14th time head coach
Alex Beguinet has qualified five or more to the NCAA meet.
2022 marks Gorman's fourth trip to the NCAA Championship as she is a two-time All-America honoree. Ferrari, Hossfeld and Zegers return to the national stage for the second time while Flanagan and Lee qualify for the first time in their Duke careers.
Last year, Ferrari, Gorman, Hossfeld and Zegers collected All-America recognition in their respective events.
The women will kick off the championship with round-robin bouts on Thursday followed by the semifinals and finals on Friday. The men will follow with the same schedule on Saturday and Sunday.
The championship includes individual events in each of six weapons (men's epee, men's foil, men's saber, women's epee, women's foil and women's saber) and one combined team champion.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
A live feed of semifinal and final bouts will be available on Friday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Semifinals and finals, along with other championships highlights, will air on ESPNU on Wednesday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m.
