DURHAM – The No. 14 Duke rowing team opens the 2022 spring season on Saturday when it travels to Clemson, S.C., for the Carolina Cup on Lake Hartwell.
The Blue Devils and Tigers will face one another in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Second Varsity 4, Third Varsity 4 and Third Varsity 8. Racing is set to begin at 11:30 a.m., with live results available via
Twitter.
SHOOTING FOR SIX
- The Blue Devils are aiming for their sixth consecutive Carolina Cup win on Saturday, having placed first in the team standings each year since 2017.
- Duke netted a winning total of 90 points at last season's regatta on March 6, 2021, besting Clemson (80 points) and North Carolina (70).
- The Blue Devils swept all five races, crossing the finish line over 20 seconds ahead of the second-place boat in the 2V8+ and the 3V8+. Duke's Second Varsity 4 and Third Varsity 4 crews placed first and second, respectively, in the 2V4+/3V4+ race.
- The Duke Varsity 8, which featured current student-athletes Lauren Sizemore (stroke), Gabriella Salvati, Megan Lee, Morgan Linsley, Meera Chakrabarti, Erin Heyeck, Sydney Johnson and McKendree Densel (bow), finished 4.2 seconds (6:26.8) ahead of the Tigers (6:31.0).
DUKE IN THE RANKINGS
- The preseason Pocock/CRCA poll was released Wednesday, Feb. 16, with the Blue Devils starting off as the nation's No. 14 team.
- Duke has held a spot in the top 20 in each of the last 22 released polls, dating back to April of 2019.
- The Blue Devils were ranked for the entirety of last season, concluding the spring at No. 16.
- Duke is one of three ACC teams ranked in this year's preseason poll, joining No. 5 Virginia and No. 11 Syracuse.
- Duke and Virginia are the only ACC programs to have competed at each of the last two NCAA Championships.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
- Clemson enters the 2022 campaign fielding a young roster, as the Tigers are comprised of 13 freshmen, 20 sophomores, 12 juniors and 12 seniors.
- Six members of the Clemson V8 boat that finished fourth at last season's ACC Championship returned this spring.
- The Blue Devils and Tigers will also compete at the Oak Ridge Invite set for March 19-20 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as well as the Lake Wheeler Invitational set for April 22-23 in Raleigh, N.C.
NEXT TIME IN CLEMSON
- Duke will return to Lake Hartwell May 13-14 for the ACC Championship.
- The conference regatta in May of 2021 saw the Blue Devils earn silver with second-place finishes in the V8, V4 and 3V8. It marked the second consecutive season that Duke claimed an ACC silver medal on the way to receiving a bid to the NCAA Championships.
- Three Blue Devils picked up All-ACC honors – Johnson (first team), Salvati (first team) and graduate student Tara Fagan (second team).
