DURHAM – Duke goaltender
Mike Adler made a career-high 20 saves and the Blue Devils had 10 different players score a goal in a 14-8 victory over No. 19 Richmond in men's lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The 10th-ranked Blue Devils improve to 7-2 overall, while Richmond falls to 3-2 on the year. Sophomore
Brennan O'Neill and graduate student
Joe Robertson notched hat tricks to pace the offense.
Defensively, Duke held Richmond's leading scorer Ryan Lanchbury to just a goal and two assists, more than two points off his 5.5 points per game average this season. Adler's 20 saves tie his career high and are the most he has made as a Blue Devil.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, getting goals from five different players and two off the stick of Robertson. O'Neill opened the scoring 4:38 into the game before Richmond tied the game just over two minutes later.
Duke caught fire in the final seven minutes, scoring five goals in a span of 6:23, including three in just 2:43. Robertson provided the bookends for the Blue Devils, scoring his 10th goal of the season at 6:58 and capping the run with a man-up score with 35 ticks left in the period.
Adler made seven saves and Duke forced four Richmond turnovers in the opening 15 minutes. The Blue Devils held the Spiders without a goal for 14:30 spanning the first and second quarter.
After O'Neill extended the lead to six, 7-1, the Spiders pulled back within four on tallies from Cooper Dainton and Luke Frankeny. Duke responded with the next two goals and never looked back en route to the six-goal victory. Frankeny led the way for the Spiders with four goals and an assist.
Leading 8-3 at halftime, Duke tacked on six more in the second half with five of them coming from different scorers. Junior
Grant Mitchell notched an unassisted goal to make it 9-3, while
Jake Naso notched his fourth marker of the season. Graduate student
Cameron Mulé continued to be Duke's man-up magician, scoring his fourth extra-man goal of the year and
Tyler Carpenter and
Aidan Danenza both added goals in the fourth quarter.
Naso finished his day 12-of-23 at the faceoff dot and picked up seven ground balls. Carpenter snagged five ground balls to go with his goal. Both freshman
Andrew McAdorey and graduate student
Nakeie Montgomery had a goal and two assists.
Richmond's Devin Craven and Zach Vigue split time between the pipes. Craven made 10 saves, while Vigue came in to make six saves.
Duke's special teams were outstanding with extra man going 3-of-3 and man-down defense killing all five penalties.
Duke begins a four-game road swing next Saturday, March 12 at Loyola. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., at Ridley Athletic Complex.
