NICE TO MEET YOU
Duke and UMass Lowell will meet on the diamond for the first time in the two programs histories. The Blue Devils are 11-6 all-time against teams currently in the America East with the last meeting being a midweek matchup against Hartford in 2015.
Â
MARC MADNESS
Junior right-hander
Marcus Johnson is beginning to settle into his role as the Friday night arm for the Blue Devils. After a rough opening day, Johnson was stellar on the hill against Bucknell. The Fontana, Calif., native boasted 12 strikeouts in six innings of work to earn the win. The 12 strikeouts were the most since Bryce Jarvis' 15 Ks against Cornell in February of 2020.
Â
EYE, EYE CAPTAIN
Graduate student outfielder
Chris Davis has been a spark plug for the Duke offense, finding ways to get on base and showing some pop. Davis put together back-to-back games against East Carolina and ECU in which he hit home runs on the first pitch of the at-bat. Also, Davis has been extremely effective in getting on base, boasting 13 walks to just six strikeouts and an on-base percentage of .524. There is a long season ahead, but his OBP would blow the current school record of .493 out of the water.Â
Â
FINDING THE RIGHT FIT
Duke has adjusted its lineup in almost every game this season, as no player has hit in a single spot in the lineup in more than seven games this year. In addition, the Blue Devils have been fairly consistent in the infield defensively, but have tried different combinations in the outfield.
Â
SEIDL'S STELLAR START TO THE SEASON
Junior right-hander
Billy Seidl has been electric to open the 2022 season. After coming out of the bullpen throughout his career, the Wellesley, Mass., native has shifted into a starting role. Seidl opened the season without allowing a hit in the first 10.0 innings pitched and currently carries a .048 opponent batting average. In addition, Seidl has tallied 18 strikeouts and a 1.98 ERA.
Â
THE WAITING IS OVER
When graduate student
Trevor Johnson entered the game against VMI on Feb. 19, it was a long time coming. A transfer from Dartmouth, Johnson missed the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and saw his 2020 season cut short. He made his first appearance in a collegiate baseball game since Feb. 23, 2020, a full 727 days. Graduate student
John Natoli was in a similar boat, seeing his first appearance on the mound against East Carolina since March 8, 2020 - 724 days.
Â
SCHRECK OFFENSIVE EXPLOSIONÂ
Senior
RJ Schreck enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons in program history in 2021, breaking onto the scene for the Blue Devils. The Los Angeles, Calif., native boasted 18 home runs, good for fourth in program history, and a slugging percentage of .635, ranking ninth in school lore. A Third Team All-ACC and Second Team ABCA All-Atlantic selection, Schreck also belted three home runs against Wright State in the 2021 Knoxville Regional, becoming the first Blue Devil to hit three home runs in a game since 2015. Schreck enters the season on the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Watch List.
Â
CRABTREE & SCHRECK DINGERS
Graduate student
Chris Crabtree and senior
RJ Schreck have shown their power and look to continue it in the 2022 season. Both Blue Devils hold 20 career home runs and rank tied for 17th all-time in program history. Should either replicate the production they saw in 2021, they will jump into the top five in program lore.
Â
UNUSUAL PATH TO DUKE
Graduate student
Caleb McRoy joined the Blue Devils in January and had an unusual path to the Duke roster. No stranger to Durham, McRoy was a member of the North Carolina Central baseball program but found himself looking for a new home after the school announced it would be discontinuing the program after the 2021 season. McRoy, a native of Raleigh, N.C., joined Duke, who he had faced four times in his career. Against the Blue Devils, McRoy allowed just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 11 in seven innings of work.
Â
HOME SWEET HOME
Graduate students
Chris Crabtree and
Wil Hoyle have invested blood, sweat and tears into the Duke program after seeing it develop in their backyards. Hoyle, a native of Durham, and Crabtree, a native of Bahama, are no strangers to the Duke program and grew up facing each other in high school baseball in Durham. Now, the duo are co-captains of the 2022 team after leading the Blue Devils to unprecedented heights during their careers.
