DURHAM – Duke sophomore attackman
Brennan O'Neill was named one of 25 men's nominees selected as a Tewaaraton Award Nominee Presented by AXIA Time, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday.
The award's selection committee, comprised of premier college coaches, picks 25 men and women for the respective nominee lists with five finalists selected from each group. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.
O'Neill is one of three sophomores on the list and one of six student-athletes from the ACC. He also is one of 11 attackmen nominated. A starter in all 15 games, the native of Bay Shore, N.Y., leads all Blue Devils with 49 goals and 65 points overall. He is riding a red-hot stretch, scoring 32 points in the past seven games and registering at least three goals in each of those outings.
O'Neill's 49 goals are the most in the nation, while his 3.27 per game average is third in the ACC and 11th nationally. He is one of two Division I players to record at least six goals in three different games and is one of 14 to record at least seven in a game.
The 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, O'Neill became the 49th Blue Devil to score 100 career points with a hat trick at Syracuse. He reached the benchmark in 29 games, tying for third-fastest in Duke history. He currently ranks tied for 40th in Duke career scoring history with 120 points. O'Neill is six goals shy of becoming the 23rd Blue Devil to score 100 career goals. He has 94 goals in 32 games and is on pace to get to 100 in 34 games, four faster than Zack Greer's 38 games.
The five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May and will be invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on June 2.
The 11th-ranked Blue Devils return to the field May 1 against No. 15 North Carolina. Faceoff for the regular season home finale is set for 5:30 p.m., on ACC Network.
