SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 12 Duke softball (35-6, 15-2 ACC) used 10 hits and five stolen bases to power past Syracuse, downing the Orange, 5-0, on Friday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Peyton St. George (18-3) threw her third solo shutout of the season, allowing just four hits while striking out eight to pick up the win. All nine starters reached base safely on offense, with
Kamryn Jackson recording two RBI against the Orange (20-19, 3-14 ACC) to lead the team.
Right out of the gate, the Blue Devils caused problems for Syracuse starter Ariana Adams.
Jameson Kavel led off the game with a walk, then promptly stole second base.
Deja Davis was then hit by a pitch, before the duo executed a double steal, that forced a throwing error by the Syracuse catcher to score Kavel and take a 1-0 lead.
Kristina Foreman continued to have success driving in runs when she laced a double to score Davis and extend the lead to 2-0. The RBI gives the senior 13 RBI in her last five games.
The speed of the Blue Devils continued to wreak havoc on the Orange in the second inning.
Kyla Morris would reach on an error, then force another error as she stole second base and advanced to third base when the throw sailed past the infield. Jackson would quickly make the Orange pay for the two errors, driving in Morris with an RBI single to center field for a 3-0 advantage.
While the two sides traded scoreless frames in the third and fourth innings, the Blue Devils struck again in the fifth. Hits by
Claire Davidson,
Francesca Frelick and Morris loaded the bases, before Jackson drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Frelick would add an insurance run in the sixth inning, driving home a run on a single following a Foreman hit-by-pitch and
Gisele Tapia single to make it 5-0. St. George would take over from there, striking out two and getting the other four outs via groundout to secure the complete game.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Saturday, facing the Orange for game two at 1 p.m. The contest will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
