DURHAM – With the 2021-22 season now complete, Duke wrestling turns its attention to a new season starting in the fall. The Blue Devils have been active this summer, competing and coaching in several events across the world.
U20 Pan American Championships
Assistant coach
Tom Erikson recently spent time coaching for the United States at the U20 Pan American Championships in Oaxtepec, Mexico. It was a clean sweep for the Americans, who took all 10 gold medals in freestyle wrestling, finishing the event with a perfect 250 points.
"When this trip was offered, I jumped at the chance to do it, as it had been 37 years since I had the privilege to compete down in Mexico City for this very same tournament," said Erikson. "Any time you get a chance to represent the United States by either coaching or competing, it's a big deal and this was a big deal for me. Going down to Mexico City I knew we had a pretty solid team, but I was a little surprised to come out of there with 10 gold medals along with the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler."
Erikson led the group to Mexico alongside Purdue assistant coach Leroy Vega. Making the trip to coach these young wrestlers was important to Erikson.
"We have had multiple coaches here at Duke who have represented the United States on the International level and I thought its time wrestling should throw our hat into the ring," said Erikson. "A young man can now come to Duke and know we don't want to just be successful on the national level but on the world level."
U23 Greco-Roman World Team Trials
Earlier this summer, rising senior
Vincent Baker had a strong run at the U23 Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio. The Roswell, Ga., native entered as the No. 3 seed and went 3-0 before reaching the finals at 87kg. In a best of three matchup against Minnesota's Michial Foy to decide the lone spot on the team, Baker opened with a 9-5 win. Baker would ultimately drop the final two to finish in second place.
Baker has developed his reputation as one of the top Greco wrestlers in the program, after finishing third at the U23 Nationals last summer and entering Duke as a high school Greco-Roman national champion.
