DURHAM – Duke women's soccer junior
Emily Royson received accolades on Tuesday for her efforts on the pitch in the opening week of the season as the Blue Devils defeated East Carolina (1-0) on the road and UNC Greensboro (3-1) at home in Koskinen Stadium.
The 5-6 defender out of Toms River, N.J., helped the Duke backline limit the Pirates to only one shot in the 1-0 victory, while allowing only two shots against the Spartans on Sunday in the 3-1 win. Royson saw action in 167 of 180 minutes in the two matches. Â
Over her career with the Blue Devils, Royson has started 36-of-41 matches on defense and helped Duke collect 23 clean sheets. This season, Royson gets to take the field with her sister, Jenna, who is using her fifth year at Duke, after transferring from Georgetown. Â
The second-ranked Blue Devils (2-0) will hit the road this week to take on 11th-ranked Tennessee (0-1-1) on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. The match will be aired live on the SEC Network from Regal Soccer Stadium.
