BREMERTON, Wash. – Junior
Ian Siebers led the way for Duke men's golf at the Husky Invitational this week, as the Blue Devils finished in seventh place at Gold Mountain Golf Club with a three-day team score of 881 (+17).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke shot a 295 (+7) as a team in the final round.
- Junior Ian Siebers poured in an eagle, his first of the season, on the par-5 11th hole to get into red numbers on the day en route to finishing as the low Blue Devil on Tuesday with an even-par 72.
- Siebers, the Bellevue, Wash. native, finished tied for 16th place at 3-over 219 to lead Duke overall.
- Fellow junior Jimmy Zheng played steady golf throughout the final round, shooting an even-par 36 on the front and a 37 on the back to card a 73 (+1), his best round of the week.
- Ethan Evans (+1), Kelly Chinn (+5) and William Love (+10) rounded out the Blue Devils' lineup on Tuesday.
- Evans ended his first start for the Blue Devils with Duke's second-best overall 54-hole score for in a tie for 24th place at 7-over 223.
- Both Love and Chinn finished in a tie for 34th place at 8-over 224, and Zheng slotted in for a share of 58th place with a 16-over 232.
- On the Cascade Course for the Husky Individual, John Peters remained near the top of the leaderboard all day. The sophomore made the turn after a bogey-free and 2-under 33 courtesy of back-to-back birdies on holes eight and nine.
- Peters, a Carlisle, Pa. native, went on to finish in third place after a final round 70 (-1) and a 54-hole 5-under 208.
- Luke Sample started his day just outside the top-10 at +1 and moved up the leaderboard as the round went on before a career-best 67 (-4) helped the sophomore finish tied for fourth place at 3-under 210.
- The New York, N.Y. native made the turn with a 2-under 33 and matched his efforts on the front with a 2-under 34 on the back for a final round 67 (-4).
- Daniel Choi shot his first under-par round as a Blue Devil with his 2-under 69, finishing in a tie for 13th place at 3-over 216.
- Both Cameron Martinez-Piedra and Daniel Uranga finished at 16-over 229 to round out Duke's efforts for the week.
NOTES
- Siebers had the second-best scoring average on par-5's throughout the event at 4.50.
- Peters and Sample had the third-most birdies in the Husky Individual Invitational with 13 each and both finished inside the top-10 for scoring average on par-4's at 3.88 and 4.00 respectively.
- Zheng was sixth-best for the tournament on par-3's, with a scoring average of 3.08.
- Sample's 67 on Tuesday tied a career-best for his lowest 18-hole score. The sophomore also shot a 67 in the first round of the Old Town Club Collegiate in September 2021.
- Choi turned in his first under-par round and round in the 60s as a Blue Devil with his 69 (-2) on Tuesday. The freshman, a native of Westlake, Texas, had a previous career-low of an even-par 72 in the first round of the Rod Myers Invitational on Sept. 9.
