Duke returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first of two in-state rivalry games, hosting Wake Forest as part of ESPN's Super Tuesday slate.
On ESPN, Rece Davis and Debbie Antonelli have the call. David Shumate and John Roth are set to broadcast the game on the Blue Devil Sports Network from LEARFIELD
The game caps a grueling month of January that saw the young Blue Devils play five road games in the span of 24 days. Six of Duke's final 10 games this season come at home.
Duke is coming off an 86-43 win at Georgia Tech Saturday -- the second-largest ACC road win in school history and the second fewest points allowed by Duke all-time in an ACC road game.
Freshman Kyle Filipowski, staking his claim as the ACC Rookie of the Year, leads all conference freshmen in scoring, rebounding and double-doubles. He has 10 doubles-doubles, including a monster current five-game stretch averaging 22.0 points and 12.0 boards.
This week's ACC Rookie of the Week for the seventh time, Filipowski is the only freshman nationally averaging at least 15 points and nine rebounds this season.
Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor is coming off a seven-point, eight-assist and no turnover game at Georgia Tech and is now fifth in the ACC in conference play with a 2.83 assist/turnover ratio. He is averaging 11.8 points and a 4.6 assist/turnover ratio over the last five.
Freshman Dereck Lively IIÂ is second in the ACC and 38th nationally with 1.9 blocked shots. He has eight blocks and both of his career-high 10-rebound games over the last three.
Duke has out-rebounded 17 of its first 21 opponents and is 14-3 this season when holding an advantage on the glass. Duke is 12-3 when leading in offensive rebounding.
The ACC's best rebounding team, Duke ranks fourth nationally in rebound margin (+9.1), ninth in offensive rebounds (13.6) and 13th in rebounds per game (39.7) -- leading the conference in each category. Duke has not finished as the ACC's team leader in rebounds since 1998-99.
Duke and Tennessee are the only teams ranked inside the NCAA's top 15 for each rebound margin, offensive rebounds and total rebounds.
Duke has held 18 of 21 teams below their season scoring average, ranking second in the ACC and 30th nationally in scoring defense (63.2). Georgia Tech was the most recent of eight teams this season to post a then season-low in points versus the Blue Devils.
On This Date: January 31
Duke is 18-8 all-time when playing on Jan. 31 -- winning five straight, seven of its last eight and 10 of its last 12 on this date.
Duke and Wake Forest have met four times on this date -- each coming on the road -- with Wake winning in 1922 and 1925 and Duke winning in 1979 and 1987.
About Wake Forest
Duke and Wake Forest will meet for the 259th time next Tuesday in a series that dates back to the 1905-06 season.
The first game in Duke's program history came on March 2, 1906 vs. Wake -- a 24-10 Wake victory in Durham.
When the teams met earlier this season in Winston-Salem, Duke was without freshmen Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively II (both out with illness) and the Blue Devils fell, 81-70.
Jaylen Blakes scored a career-high 17 points off the bench for Duke in that game, while Wake shot .522 in the second half with five in double figures, led by Tyree Applebee's 18 points (2-of-8 field goals, 13-of-14 free throws).
Filipowski's Monster Stretch: 22.0 Points, 12.0 Rebounds, .486 FG% Over Last Five Games
Kyle Filipowski is the seven-time ACC Rookie of the Week, winning the award in each of the last three weeks after becoming the first freshman in league history to open a season with four-consecutive Rookie of the Week honors.
Now with seven ACC Rookie of the Week honors, he is tied with former Blue Devil Marvin Bagley III for the sixth most in a season in conference history -- Â the ACC record of 10 is held by Duke's Jabari Parker (2014), UNC's Tyler Hansbrough (2006) and GT's Kenny Anderson (1990).
In ACC history, the six previous players to win seven or more Rookie of the Week awards went on to be named ACC Rookie of the Year.
He enters Tuesday's game vs. Wake Forest having scored 110 points with 60 rebounds over the last five games while shooting .486 (36-of-74) from the field -- included in that span are 28 points and a career-best 15 rebounds vs. Pitt and a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds at Virginia Tech.
He is the only freshman nationally averaging at least 15 points (15.8) and nine rebounds (9.4), and his averages increase to 16.7 and 9.7 in ACC play.
He is just the third Duke freshmen all-time to have at least 28-15 in a game, joining Bagley (four times in 2017-18) and Parker (once in 2013-14).
His 10 double-doubles are top-15 nationally and lead all D-I freshmen, while his 9.4 rebounds per game are fifth in the ACC and the most by a power conference freshman.
Filipowski is the first Blue Devil since Bagley in 2017-18 to record at least three consecutive games with at least 17 points and 14 rebounds -- that streak was snapped with his 29-10 performance at Virginia Tech.
Filipowski and Ohio State's Brice Sensabaugh (Big Ten) are the only freshmen in power conferences to be their conference's respective freshman leader in each for points, rebounds and double-doubles.
Filipowski is 10th nationally in KenPom's Player of the Year standings.
He is one of four freshman on the 25-player midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, joining Kansas' Grady Dick, Baylor's Keyonte George and Alabama's Brandon Miller.
Blue Devils Allowing 63.2 Points -- Second in ACC and 30th Nationally in Scoring Defense; Leads ACC in Three-Point Defense
Duke is second in the ACC and 30th nationally in scoring defense, yielding just 63.2 points per game. Fifteen of the first 21 opponents have been held to less than 70 points, while eight have failed to score more than 60.Â
Duke has held 18 of the 21 opponents to below their season scoring average -- Duke is 15-3 in those games. Eight scored a then-season low for points, including holding Iowa to a then-season-low 62, Xavier to 64 (20 points below its average), Miami to a season-low tying 66 (12 off its scoring average) and Georgia Tech to a season-low 43. The Hurricanes' also shot their lowest field goal percentage of the year vs. Duke (.349).
Duke's strong defensive numbers come against a schedule rated 27th-toughest versus opponent offenses (per KenPom).
Duke defeated Georgia Tech on the road Saturday, 86-43, holding the Yellow Jackets to 18 second-half points and winning by 43 -- Duke's second-largest road ACC win in school history and just the third 40-point ACC road win all-time by the Blue Devils.
The 43 points were tied for the second fewest allowed by Duke in an ACC road game all-time and its fewest allowed since beating Notre Dame, 57-43, last season in South Bend.
Duke: NCAA's Top 15 for Rebounds, Offensive Rebounds and Rebound Margin; No. 1 in Offensive Rebound Percentage
Duke has been among the nation's best rebounding teams this season, leading the nation in offensive rebounding percentage (38.6), fourth nationally in rebound margin (+9.1), ninth in offensive rebounds per game (13.6) and 13th in total rebounds per game (39.7) -- leads the ACC in each category.
Duke is one of just two teams -- along with Tennessee -- ranked inside the NCAA's top 15 for each rebound margin, offensive rebounds and total rebounds.
Leading the ACC in rebounding, Duke is looking to finish as the conference's leader in total rebounds per game for the first time since 1998-99.
The Blue Devils have out-rebounded 17 of their first 21 opponents, including 10 by double-digit margins. Duke opened the season with a double-digit rebound margin in each of the first six games -- the program record for longest such streak (at any point in a season). Duke had five-game streaks in 2017-18, 1998-98, 1962-63 and 1960-61.
Since the start of the 2020-21 season, Duke is 46-7 when out-rebounding its opponent (14-3 this season).
Offensive rebounding has been a significant strength, with Duke totaling 20+ on the offensive glass four times already -- the Blue Devils hadn't had more than 19 offensive boards in any game over each of the last two seasons.
Proctor, Lively Emerging for Blue Devils
Freshman guard Tyrese Proctor was originally committed to Duke's 2023 class, but made the decision to reclassify for this season in June 2022, while classmate Dereck Lively II entered the season as the No. 1 recruit in the class.
In the absence of junior starting guard Jeremy Roach (who missed three consecutive games earlier this month with a toe injury), Proctor stepped up to handle point guard duties. Finding his groove over the last five games, Proctor is Duke's second-leading scorer in that stretch at 11.8 points -- double figures four times -- with 23 assists and five turnovers in the span.
Proctor's 2.83 assist-turnover ratio in conference play ranks fifth and is coming off an eight-assist, no-turnover game at Georgia Tech
A calf injury held Lively out in the preseason, but the 7-foot-1 center has come on with 5.8 points and 6.0 rebounds and 10 blocks over the last five games.
Lively's 1.9 blocks per game rank second in the ACC and 38th nationally -- only 12 players have nationally have a block rate better than his (min. 200 defensive possessions).
Bounce-Back Ability
Duke is 28-3 following a loss since the 2016-17 season, not dropping consecutive games since 2019-20 -- not including the 2020-21 COVID season.
Over the last 25 seasons, Duke has lost by 20+ points in the regular season just six times, and is undefeated in the game to follow -- including the Jan. 7th win at Boston College.
Bedeviled By Injuries
The Blue Devils have dealt with their fair share of injuries this season, beginning in the preseason when Duke was without both freshmen Dariq Whitehead (foot fracture) and Derek Lively II (calf) for an extended period of time. Lively missed the season opener and Whitehead made his debut in limited minutes on Nov. 18 vs. Delaware.
Junior Jeremy Roach sustained a toe injury on Nov. 27 vs. Purdue, played through the injury for three games before missing the game vs. UMES on Dec. 10. He returned for three more  games and then missed the next three in early January as he dealt with the same injury.
Sophomore Jaylen Blakes sustained a broken nose in practice on Jan. 17 and has played limited minutes over the last three games.
Whitehead left the game at Virginia Tech on Jan. 23 with a lower leg injury and did not play at Georgia Tech.
Duke has played just 12 of its 21 games this season with its full roster of scholarship players available.
Duke's Three-Point Streak
Duke has connected on at least one three-pointer in 1,174 straight games, the second-longest streak nationally.
It has been more than 30 years since Duke was held without a three-point field goal -- Dec. 30, 1989, versus Hawai'i.
