CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke rowing closed out the 2023 fall slate at the annual Rivanna Romp Head Race in Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday. The Blue Devils raced 12 boats along the 4,000-meter course on the Rivanna Reservoir and competed against crews from Louisville, Minnesota, Navy, North Carolina and host Virginia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duke opened the day with the Varsity Eight event, racing five boats against a field of 24 entrants from six schools.
The Varsity Eight A boat was first to cross the finish line for the Blue Devils, placing third overall with a time of 13:17.8. The B boat followed closely behind, finishing fifth overall and clocking a time of 13:26.3.
Duke's C boat rounded out the top-10 after narrowly edging North Carolina's top boat for tenth place, clocking a final time of 13:50.8, just .04 seconds ahead of the Tar Heels.
In the Varsity Fours race, Duke again finished with three boats in the top-10. The A boat placed fourth overall, while the B and C boats finished back-to-back for ninth and tenth place.
For the second straight year, Duke took home the trophy in the Novice Eight event, finishing first against seven other freshman boats.
Duke and Virginia were the only two schools to place multiple boats in the top-10 of the Varsity Eight race. The Cavaliers had four of their five crews finish in the top-10, while the Blue Devils had three.
