DURHAM - The Duke volleyball team celebrated its senior class with a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-22, 31-29) over Clemson Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils completed the season sweep over the Tigers and improve to 19-9 overall and 10-7 in the ACC.
Duke was led by Gracie Johnson with 14 kills, followed by Kerry Keefe and Rachel Richardson with 10 each. Emma Worthington tallied a double-double with 43 assists and led the team with 13 digs while libero Madison Bryant added 11 digs. Lizzie Fleming led the blocking with five total blocks, including one solo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke got going early and took a 1-0 lead as it hit .364 percent in the opening set. The Blue Devils' blocking contingent was firing on all cylinders with five blocks from four different Blue Devils, limiting Clemson to a .154 clip.
- The Tigers responded with a .344 hitting percentage of their own in the second set, but still couldn't quite find an answer to Duke's high-powered offense. Richardson led the team with six kills and no errors to hit .750 while Fleming and Jess Robinson recorded no errors.
- The third and final set featured 14 ties in the back-and-forth late set affair. Duke trailed 21-17 late in the set, but fought back as Johnson and Keefe combined for 12 of Duke's 19 kills. Duke's defense locked in as Bryant collected eight of her 11 digs in the third set while Fleming tallied three blocks.
- The two teams traded points until ultimately Johnson knocked down consecutive kills, giving Duke its 19th win of the season.
NOTABLES
- This was head coach Jolene Nagel's 702nd career victory and her 499th at the helm of the Blue Devils. With one match left of the regular season, she is one win shy of 500 at Duke.
- Duke has won seven of its last eight matches this fall.
- Duke's 19 wins is its best since 2017 when it finished the year 19-12.
- Duke hit .360 percent for the match, its 10th time this year hitting above .300.
- Keefe has tallied at least 10 kills in all but three matches this year.
- Fleming and Robinson combined for 16 kills and just two errors to hit .483 percent.
- Clemson was led by Adria Powell with nine kills and no errors.
