TULSA, Okla. – Senior heavyweight
Jonah Niesenbaum clinched his spot in day two of the NCAA Wrestling Championships after splitting a pair of matches on Thursday.
Niesenbaum faced off with South Dakota State's AJ Nevills in the opening bout but fell in an 8-1 decision. The Allentown, Pa., native bounced right back in the evening session with a convincing 6-0 victory over Hayden Copass of Purdue to advance in the consolation bracket.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nevills, seeded No. 14 in the bracket, recorded a takedown in each of the three periods and accumulated riding time to defeat No. 19 Niesenbaum, 8-1.
- Niesenbaum then moved into the consolation bracket for the second session of the day where he met No. 30 Copass.
- Niesenbaum was in full control of the match against Copass, scoring an early takedown for a 2-0 lead after the first period.
- In the second period, Niesenbaum accumulated almost three minutes of riding time to help his cause.
- Niesenbaum scored three more points in the final period with an additional takedown and locked in the extra riding time point to claim the 6-0 win.
