LAST TIME OUT
- Duke track and field got its outdoor season off to a rapid start as the Blue Devils swept the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational this past weekend, placing first in both the men's and women's fields.
- The Blue Devil women flexed their muscle throughout the three-day meet and totaled 247 points – 136.5 points more than the runner-up (JMU). On the men's side, Tyler Hrbek and Robbie Otal helped lead Duke to the meet win via record-setting performances in the men's pole vault and the men's discus, respectively.
- Graduate student Dana Baker's prolific performance in the women's javelin, along with a top-five program mark in the men's hammer throw by classmate Schreck, headlined a strong first day of competition for the Duke track and field program at the Shamrock Invitational.
- Baker, a 2022 USTFCCCA All-American, delivered the stoutest performance of the day en route to winning the event in her season debut. Setting the tone right out of the gate, the Olathe, Kan., product launched the javelin 53.78m (176-5 feet) – the farthest of the field.
- In addition to improving the distance on her No. 2-ranked throw in program lore, Baker also shattered both the seven-year-old meet (49.19m) and 12-year-old stadium records, respectively.
- Schreck etched his name in the program record books following a stellar showing of his own in the men's hammer throw. Schreck made his fourth attempt his best, recording a throw measuring 57.22m (187-9 feet) to finish runner-up and slot himself No. 4 all-time on the Duke list.
- The Blue Devils had another outstanding showing at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday, as Isabel Wakefield smashed the facility and meet record in the women's long jump while the Blue Devils posted five top-five program marks and won seven events.
- Wakefield kicked off the Friday slate with a bang by dismantling the seven-year-old stadium and meet records in the women's long jump. Wakefield made her fifth attempt her best as she flew out to 6.29m (20-7.75 feet) slotting herself atop the field.
- Duke wrapped up the weekend setting two more facility records via personal-best performances by Hrbek and Otal in their respective events.
- Otal got the Blue Devils off to a blazing start in the first field event of the day, flinging the discus 58.83m (193 feet) on his first attempt to pick up the first win of the afternoon.
- After passing on the first 10 heights, Hrbek cleared the next three on his second attempt before finishing with a final clearance of 5.15m (16-10.75 feet). Not only did his mark establish a new facility record, but it also inserted himself into the No. 5 spot on the Duke charts.
