DURHAM – No. 11 Duke softball (31-8, 10-5 ACC) recorded its second combined no-hitter this season and third in program history on Monday when it defeated Elon (14-20, 8-3 CAA), 4-0, at Duke Softball Stadium.
Junior
Claire Davidson and freshman
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon combined to shut out the Phoenix after allowing just four runners to reach base on two walks and two errors. Duke's first joint no-hitter on the year came in game two of a doubleheader with Charleston Southern on Feb. 22. Monday's performance by Davidson marked her second combined no-no as she was also part of the program's first combined no-hitter in an effort with
Shelby Waters against NC State in 2021.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman D'Auna Jennings jumpstarted the offense with a leadoff base hit to third in the first inning. The Houston, Texas, native then moved up two bases on a stolen base and groundout before a sacrifice fly from senior Gisele Tapia brought her home to put the Blue Devils ahead, 1-0.
- The Blue Devils tacked on two additional runs in the bottom of the third thanks to three hits and an error to extend their advantage to 3-0.
- Jennings touched home one final time in the fourth following another RBI-single from Tapia. Jennings recorded a one-out walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout to move herself into scoring position.
- The Blue Devils defense turned double plays in the fifth and sixth inning to limit the Phoenix offense and secure their 31st victory of the year.
