DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse senior
Kenny Brower and junior
Brennan O'Neill have been selected as nominees for the 2023 Tewaaraton Award as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday afternoon. Brower and O'Neill are two of the 25 players selected as nominees for the pre-eminent lacrosse award.
Notre Dame leads the way with three nominees, while six schools (Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia) have two players represented.
"The Tewaaraton Nominees are an extraordinary group of athletes," said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "Their talent is taking the excitement of college lacrosse to a new level, and we are eager to watch the Nominees and their teammates perform over the closing stretch of the 2023 season."
This marks the second consecutive year O'Neill is a nominee for the prestigious award, while Brower makes the 25-person list for the first time.
Anchoring Duke's defense, Brower draws the matchup against the opponents' top attackmen. Most recently Brower held fellow nominee Connor Shellenberger of Virginia to a goal and two assists, over two points below his average. Shellenberger also only managed three assists in the first meeting between the two teams. Among Brower's outstanding performances was his effort at Saint Joseph's, holding leading scorer Levi Anderson without a point for just the second time in his career.
Brower ranks second on the team with 12 caused turnovers and is fourth among non-faceoff specialists with 27 ground balls. He has at least one ground ball in 10 games and has recorded at least one caused turnover six times. As a team, the Blue Devils have held 10 of their 13 opponents under their scoring average this season. A two-year team captain, Brower has started every game of his career. He has 105 ground balls and 44 caused turnovers in his 55 games.
The leader of Duke's offense, O'Neill has 65 points from 38 goals and 27 assists. He ranks second nationally in total points and is one of two Division I players to rank in the top 20 in points per game, goals per game and assists per game.
O'Neill has led Duke in points in nine of the 13 games this season, notching seven hat tricks, dishing three-plus assists six times and scoring at least five points in eight games. He is a four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Week this season and garnered national player of the week recognition after scoring nine points in the road win at No. 1 Virginia.
The 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year, O'Neill ranks 17th in Duke history with 194 points (136g, 58a). He is six points away from becoming the 15th player in Duke history to record 200 points. He has played in 47 career games, averaging 4.13 points per game.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from these groups, to be announced May 11 at the conclusion of the regular season.
