United States Capture Top Spot Following Pool Play

DURHAM – Pool play at the 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship concluded Monday evening with the United States emerging atop Pool A with a perfect 4-0 record. Canada is the runner-up in the group with its lone loss coming to the host country.
Representing the Blue Devils on the international stage for the United States are current senior Brennan O'Neill and former standouts JT Giles-Harris and Michael Sowers. Duke head coach John Danowski is the United States head coach.
Duke graduate student Dyson Williams is donning the Canadian uniform, while former Blue Devil Taylor Wray serves as one of the coaches of the squad.
The United States have a couple days to rest before opening the playoff round in the quarterfinal, June 28 at 10 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU. They will play the winner between Israel and Ireland. Canada's playoffs begin June 28 at 7 p.m. (ET) against the winner between Italy and Jamaica.
The semifinals are June 29 on ESPN2, and the championship game is July 1 at 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.
Through pool play O'Neill has eight points from five goals and three assists, including a hat trick in his senior team debut against Canada. Sowers has contributed seven points in the four games, notching six goals and an assist. Defensively, Giles-Harris has been stellar against some of the world's best attackmen.
Giles-Harris, drawing the matchup against the opponents' best attackers, garnered Team USA's player of the game nod against the Haudenosaunee after holding Lyle Thompson to three goals on 10 shots as the United States edged the talented squad, 9-7. Against Canada, Giles-Harris and the U.S. allowed just one goal in the second half and most recently held England to just one marker.
Williams, running out of the box for Canada, has seven goals and an assist in pool play for Canada. He notched a hat trick in the victory over Australia and had a crucial goal in the narrow win against the Haudenosaunee.
A fifth Blue Devil is taking part in the tournament as former faceoff specialists Brian Smyth is playing for Ireland. The 2020 graduate scored five goals and two assists to help Ireland win all four of their Pool F contests. Smyth and Ireland match up against Israel in a placement game with the winner advancing to play the United States.
