DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team battled valiantly but fell to No. 7 Stanford in straight sets (14-25, 23-25, 11-25) Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Taylor Williams paced the Blue Devils on offense with 10 kills while
Ngozi Iloh tallied eight.
Grace Penn logged 19 of the Blue Devils' 23 assists with
Kerry Keefe,
Mailinh Godschall and
Nikki Underwood registering five digs apiece.
Breonna Goss finished the match with an .833 hitting percentage to pace Duke, which finished with an overall hitting percentage of .215. The Blue Devils also recorded three service aces and a pair of blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Duke and Stanford opened the first set trading the first six points before five unanswered by the Cardinal gave the visitors an 8-3 advantage. The teams traded the next seven points, but three straight scores – two coming via kills – pushed Stanford's lead to seven, 14-7.
- The Blue Devils pulled within five on three occasions late in the frame but couldn't chip into the lead any further, as Stanford would go on to claim the first set, 25-14.
- Duke used a 6-2 run to start the second set with three kills coming from Williams. Stanford cut the deficit to one, but the Blue Devils responded with three kills and a pair of service aces before a Cardinal error allowed the home team to extend the advantage to 13-6.
- Stanford fought its way back and leveled the score at 16-all. Duke was able to briefly halt the run courtesy of kills from Iloh and Williams, but the visitors evened the score at 19 off kills of their own. The next five points were traded amongst the team, the Blue Devils surging ahead, 22-21, courtesy of Lauren Ingram's kill off a Penn assist. The Cardinal would tally four of the final five points of the set, however, to go in front, 2-0, in the match.
- After a tight start to the third set, Stanford used a 3-0 run to extend the lead to 6-2, before a Cardinal attack error and another kill by Iloh cut into the Cardinal lead.
- Duke continued to keep the deficit close in the third set, pulling within 15-10 courtesy of Keefe's kill following the media timeout. The Blue Devils would go on to fall in the third set, however, as Stanford closed the set on 10-1 run to complete the sweep of Duke.
NOTES:
- Duke falls to 9-19 on the season and 5-12 in league play.
- Taylor Williams registered a team-best 10 kills and finished the match with a .400 hitting percentage – tied for her second highest of the season.
- She has hit .400 on three occasions, second only to the .417-percent clip she produced versus Clemson (11/3).
- Grace Penn tallied 19 assists on the night – her 25th match this season with at least 10 dimes.
- The Blue Devils drop to 0-7 against Stanford all-time and are now 0-9 against ranked opponents this season.
