HILTON HEAD, S.C. – For the second time over the last three days, Duke women's golf sophomore
Andie Smith carded a 2-under-par, 69, on Wednesday to close action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the 6,369-yard, par-71, Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
Smith, a native of Hobe Sound, Fla., carded her second top-20 finish of the season and fifth of her career as she posted rounds of 69, 77 and 69 for a 2-over, 215, which was tied for 19th. She now owns eight rounds in the 60s over her short Blue Devil career.
Graduate student
Emma McMyler also posted a top-20 finish as she placed tied for 19th with scores of 71, 70 and 74 for a 54-hole total of 215. It marked her second top-20 finish this season and 27th of her collegiate career.
How It Happened
- Andie Smith featured the best start to the day for the Blue Devils as she rolled in an 8-footer for birdie on No. 3, hit her pitching wedge from 125 yards on No. 4 to six feet for birdie and then hit her 6-iron from 161 yards to five feet for birdie on No. 7 to get to 3-under-par. Smith had her only blemish of the day on the ninth hole with a bogey and then parred the final nine holes to finish with a 69. She hit 10 fairways and 10 greens, while collecting a career-best 26 putts. Smith scrambled well all day registering seven up-and-downs.
- After a pair of pars to open the day, senior Anne Chen suffered a double-bogey.She quickly was able to get back to even par as she hit her pitching wedge from 120 yards to nine feet for birdie on No. 4 and then rolled in a 13-footer for birdie on No. 8.Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, added another bogey on the 12th hole, but quickly rebounded by hitting her 50-degree wedge from 101 yards to a foot for birdie on the 374-yard, par-5 14th.She closed the day with three pars and a bogey to finish with a 1-over, 72.Chen placed tied for 33rd with a 4-over, 217.
- Emma McMyler had a hot start to her round as she hit her 50-degree wedge from 105 yards on her third shot into the par-5 third hole to seven feet for birdie. She also stuck her approach from 99 yards out on No. 6 to a foot for birdie to get to 2-under through six holes. McMyler, a product of San Antonio, Texas, played her final 12 holes at 4-over to finish with a 74. On the par-4 No. 14, McMyler hit her drive into the penalty area and had 153 yards into the green for her third shot. She hit her approach to 21 feet and saved par. McMyler hit 12 fairways and 13 greens on the day.
- Freshman Katie Li carded back-to-back rounds of 71 to open the first two days of the event, but struggled on Wednesday, finishing with a 79.She was limited to one birdie on the afternoon, which came on No. 2 as she hit her 8-iron from 160 yards to two feet.Li, a native of Basking Ridge, N.J., hit only nine greens on the day, after hitting 12 and 14 the first two rounds.
- Senior Phoebe Brinker closed the week with an 80 as she was limited to only one birdie for the second straight day.She finished the tournament with a Duke-best 40 pars.
- Arizona State won the team title with a 3-over, 855, while Northwestern (856), Auburn (857), South Carolina (858), Arkansas (859), LSU (864), Texas (864), Georgia (864), Duke (865) and Wake Forest (865) rounded out the top 10.
Notes
- Emma McMyler led the field with a 5-under-par ledger on par-5 holes. She led Duke with a total of 10 birdies over the event.
- Heading into the tournament, Duke held a 42-under-par score on par-5 holes, but shot 2-over for the week as a team.
- Anne Chen only missed four fairways over the three days of action.
- Duke finished with 10 birdies in the final round, while eight of the 10 were over the first eight holes of the day.
- Julia Lopez Ramirez of Mississippi State, Jennifer Cai of Northwestern, Hannah Darling of South Carolina and Farah O'Keefe of Texas all finished in a tie for first individually with a 5-under, 208.
