Adam Cooke enters his second season as an assistant coach of cross country and track & field (distance).
Cooke helped lead the Blue Devils’ men’s and women’s distance units to four program records, 19 top-five program marks and three individual qualifiers to the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
CJ Ambrosio, Nick Dahl and Michaela Reinhart all produced strong outdoor seasons as they closed out their respective Duke careers. Dahl and Reinhart collected USTFCCCA All-America Honorable Mention status in the 10,000m and 1500m races, respectively, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The duo posted a pair of top-five program marks during the regular season as Dahl moved to No. 5 in the 800m (1:48.31) and No. 2 in the 1500m (3:39.10), while Reinhart notched the second-fastest 5000m time (15:53.08) and fourth-fastest 10,000m time of 33:22.49. Ambrosio closed shattered the program record in the 5000m and moved up to No. 2 in the 10,000m with times of 13:42.50 and 28:55.77, respectively, before going on to compete at the NCAA East Regional in both events.
Assisted by Cooke, Dahl made an immediate impact as he set school records in the mile (3:55.89) and 3000m (7:59.84). The grad transfer closed out his indoor campaign with the gold medal (4:04.72) in the mile to become the first Duke men's indoor champion in the mile since Bob Wheeler in 1973. He earned USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors via a 4:07.78 finish (sixth) at the NCAA Indoor Championships to mark the first time since 2015 that the Duke men scored points at the national meet and made him the first individual to do so since Curtis Beach in 2014.
Cooke joined the Blue Devils after spending the past three years as an assistant coach of cross country and track & field at California Baptist. Cooke helped the lead the Lancers cross country program over a stretch that saw the program win four Western Athletic Conference (WAC) titles, with three straight in women's cross country and one for the men.
Over his tenure at California Baptist, the Lancers had nine individual conference champions (four in cross country, five in track) and 55 all-conference finishers (28 in cross country, 27 in track), while the women's cross country team recorded the first perfect 15-point score in WAC history in 2019. Under Cooke, the Lancers also produced four WAC Cross Country Runners of the Year and four WAC Freshmen of the Year.
Prior to his tenure at California Baptist, Cooke spent three years in a similar role at North Florida, helping the men's program win its first conference championship since transitioning to Division I, with the 2016 Atlantic Sun Cross Country Championship. The women's cross country team also took home the 2017 Atlantic Sun Championship under Cooke.
Cooke is a 2015 graduate of Georgia Tech, where he was also a volunteer assistant coach.
