Angela Reckart enters her second season as head coach of men's and women's cross country and assistant coach of track & field (distance).
In just her first season at the helm, Reckart led the Blue Devils’ men’s and women’s distance units to tremendous success as the group broke four program records, notched 19 top-five program marks and qualified three individuals to the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Junior Emily Cole enjoyed a breakout outdoor season under Reckart’s tutelage. Cole earned All-ACC First Team honors and finished as runner-up in the 3000m steeplechase at the ACC Championships, setting the school record with a PR of 9:48.20. She followed that up by clocking the sixth-fastest time of the field at the regionals to qualify for the outdoor championships, where she earned USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honors.
Graduate students CJ Ambrosio, Nick Dahl and Michaela Reinhart all produced strong outdoor seasons as they closed out their respective Duke careers. Dahl and Reinhart collected USTFCCCA All-America Honorable Mention status in the 10,000m and 1500m races, respectively, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The duo posted a pair of top-five program marks during the regular season as Dahl moved to No. 5 in the 800m (1:48.31) and No. 2 in the 1500m (3:39.10), while Reinhart notched the second-fastest 5000m time (15:53.08) and fourth-fastest 10,000m time of 33:22.49. Ambrosio closed shattered the program record in the 5000m and moved up to No. 2 in the 10,000m with times of 13:42.50 and 28:55.77, respectively, before going on to compete at the NCAA East Regional in both events.
The indoor season saw Dahl make an immediate impact as he set school records in the mile (3:55.89) and 3000m (7:59.84). The grad transfer closed out his indoor campaign with the gold medal (4:04.72) in the mile to become the first Duke men's indoor champion in the mile since Bob Wheeler in 1973. He earned USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors via a 4:07.78 finish (sixth) at the NCAA Indoor Championships to mark the first time since 2015 that the Duke men scored points at the national meet and made him the first individual to do so since Curtis Beach in 2014.
Reinhart, sophomore Charlotte Tomkinson and graduate student Josh Romine garnered All-ACC honors as the trio paced the program at the 2021 ACC Cross Country Championships. At the NCAA Southeast Regional two weeks later, Reinhart garnered her third All-Region honor and Romine his first, following 20th-place showings from each.
Reckart joined the Blue Devils after spending the past six seasons at Penn State, where she served as the associate head coach of cross country and an assistant coach of track & field (distance). In her tenure, the Nittany Lions won the 2015 Women's Big Ten Cross Country Championship and four NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region titles. Her distance runners also played critical roles in both the 2017 Big Ten Women's Indoor Championship title and the 2017 Big Ten Men's Outdoor Championship title. The Nittany Lions finished top 20 nationally in five consecutive seasons under Reckart.
Reckart oversaw the development of three women's cross country All-Americans in Elizabeth Chikotas (2016), Jillian Hunsberger (2016) and Tessa Barrett (2015) as well as several track All-Americans, including Danae Rivers (2018) and Tori Gerlach (2017). Reckart worked with both Rivers and Isaiah Harris (2018) who both became NCAA Champions in the 800m. Behind coaching from Reckart, student-athletes from her teams also broke the women's 3k and men's and women's 5k school records.
Prior to coaching at Penn State, Reckart spent three seasons as an assistant coach of cross country and track & field at North Carolina. Reckart helped lead both the men's and women's cross country teams to their first top 25 rankings in 2014, the women to the 2014 ACC Cross Country Championship and the men to a finish of 12th at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Reckart is a graduate of the College of New Jersey in 2008, where she was a member of the track & field team and posted All-America honors seven times, including as a member of a 4x400-meter relay that won two national titles.
She is married to Jeremiah Reckart and has two daughters, Juliette and Augustine.
