DURHAM – Duke fell to Virginia in its opening game of ACC play, 5-0, on Friday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Duke moved to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in ACC play. Virginia improved to 13-0 (1-0 ACC).

Junior
Marcus Johnson earned his fourth start for the Blue Devils. A native of Fontana, Calif., Johnson was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings pitched. He struck out eight batters in the contest. Virginia's Nate Savino pitched a complete game shutout for the Cavaliers, allowing just five hits.

"I told him [Johnson] after he came out of the ballgame in the seventh, if he throws the baseball like that every Friday night, I feel pretty good about our chances," Duke head coach
Chris Pollard said. "Credit Nate Savino, cause he was really good for UVA. They played terrific defense behind him."

Senior
RJ Schreck led the Blue Devils offensively, finishing 2-for-4.

Johnson was strong out of the gate, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced through three innings.

Virginia opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning as Jake Gelof hit a three-run home run to left center field.
Johnson bounced back, striking out the side in the fifth, but Gelof added another to the Cavaliers tally in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run.

Sophomore
Josh Allen entered in relief for the Blue Devils and finished the game. Allen allowed one run on two hits while fanning three in two innings of work.

Duke and Virginia continue the series with game two on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the DBAP. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network and the Varsity Network App (radio).
