DURHAM – Freshman shortstop
Alex Mooney matched his career-high four hits, but it wasn't enough as the Duke baseball team fell to Campbell, 10-6, on Tuesday at Jack Coombs Field.
Â
Campbell (19-12) out-hit Duke (13-20) 17-11 in the contest and the Blue Devils were unable to find the crucial hit, leaving 13 men on base.
Â
Right-hander
Cooper Stinson started on the hill for the Blue Devils. Stinson allowed a pair of runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in three innings of work. Campbell's Ryan Chasse surrendered two runs, unearned, on two hits and a walk.
Â
Mooney and junior
Chad Knight led Duke offensively. Mooney finished 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base. It was Duke's third four-hit outing this season and Mooney's second. Knight went 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Â
Campbell opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as the Camels connected on consecutive solo home runs. The Blue Devils retaliated in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to make it 2-2. Freshman
Devin Obee doubled to bring in Knight before Mooney drew an RBI walk.
Â
Duke took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning, 3-2, as junior
Graham Pauley recorded an RBI walk.
Â
Campbell and Duke exchanged runs in the fifth inning. Freshman
Andrew Yu singled up the middle to score Knight from second for the run and to regain the Duke lead, 4-3.
Â
The Camels took the lead late, scoring four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, both on four hits. Duke added lone runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth on an RBI groundout by freshman
Jonathan Santucci and a single by Knight, respectively.
Â
Freshman
Ryan Higgins retired all four men that he faced, including a pair of strikeouts, in relief. It was his second consecutive scoreless outing.
Â
Duke returns to action on Thursday as it hosts No. 10 Notre Dame at Jack Coombs Field for an ACC series. First pitches are slated for 6 p.m. Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
