DURHAM – Duke tried to rally from a four-run deficit late in the game but ultimately fell Saturday afternoon to No. 17 Miami, 4-3, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Blue Devils drop to 12-15 on the season and 3-8 in ACC play, while Miami moves to 20-6 and 9-2, respectively.
Graduate student
Wil Hoyle and senior
RJ Schreck led the Blue Devils with two hits each, while rookie
Alex Mooney brought home two RBI following his second home run of the season.
Despite being tabbed with the loss after allowing seven hits and three runs, starting pitcher
Luke Fox had a solid outing for Duke. The sophomore registered a season-high nine strikeouts and just one walk in six innings of work. Miami's Karson Ligon earned the win, giving up only four hits during his six innings on the mound. He improved to 4-1 on the year with the victory.
The teams were scoreless through the opening three innings until Miami broke the deadlock with an RBI double to left field in the top of the fourth. The visitors added another two runs in the sixth when Yohandy Morales and Jacob Burke both registered solo home runs. The Hurricanes extended their edge to 4-0 in the top of the seventh when CJ Kayfus singled in Dorian Gonzalez from second.
The Blue Devils would not go away though, chipping into the deficit in the bottom half of the frame after
Chad Knight recorded an RBI groundout to score
Graham Pauley from third. Pauley led off the inning with a double to left center before Schreck moved him up to third on a groundout.
Again, Duke was mounting a comeback in the bottom of the eighth after Hoyle tallied a one-out single up the middle. Mooney followed that up with a blast over the left field fence to cut the lead down to one at 4-3. Two batters later Schreck tried to continue the rally with a double to left field, but the Hurricanes recorded the final out of the frame to halt the inning and ultimately secure the win.
Adam Boucher,
Jonathan Santucci and
Josh Allen all saw action out of the bullpen for Duke. Boucher allowed two hits and one run in 0.2 innings, while Santucci and Allen posted scoreless outings and combined for four strikeouts.
The Blue Devils return to action for the series finale with Miami on Sunday at noon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
