PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Duke baseball team dropped the series-opener to Pittsburgh, 14-4, on Saturday at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh.

The Blue Devils (19-25, 8-14 ACC) were out-hit by Pittsburgh (25-18, 11-10 ACC), 7-15, in the contest.

FreshmanÂ
Alex Mooney recorded Duke's lone multi-hit day. Mooney finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base. He extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.

RookieÂ
Jonathan Santucci started on the mound for Duke. The Leominster, Mass., native was tagged with six runs, five earned, on eight hits and two walks. Santucci struck out three batters. His scoreless inning streak ended at 16.1 consecutive innings dating back to April 9 at Wake Forest. The Panthers' Matt Gilbertson surrendered two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six in seven innings of work.

Duke opened the game on the right foot as Mooney singled through the left side in the first at-bat of the game. He reached second on a stolen base with no one out, but Duke was unable to move him home.

Pittsburgh scored six runs across the first three innings to jump out to the lead.

The Blue Devils got on the board in the top of the fifth inning to pull within four, 6-2. FreshmanÂ

Alex Stone hit a home run to left field. Stones home run, his eighth of the year, traveled 420 feet and came off the bat at 106.7 mph.

The Panthers' scored a lone run in the fifth and sixth innings, before delivering a big blow in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pittsburgh scored six runs on three hits, four walks and an error in the frame to lead 14-2.

Duke pulled two more back in the top of the eighth inning. SeniorÂ
Chris Crabtree entered to pinch-hit and smoked a two-run big fly 427 feet to right field.

Junior right-handerÂ
Colten Smith entered in the seventh to limit the damage and produced a strong outing. Smith allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.

Duke and Pittsburgh will close out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of game one is slated for 11 a.m., with the second game starting 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
