BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Ana Gold crushed a grand slam over the left field wall in the top of the seventh inning to lead the 13th-ranked Blue Devils to a 7-1 victory over the 12th-ranked Hokies at Tech Softball Park on Saturday.
Duke (27-7, 9-4 ACC) maintains its perfect, 7-0, record on the road after handing Virginia Tech (26-7, 8-2 ACC) its second conference loss of the season.
Freshman
Cassidy Curd improves to 8-0 on the year, after giving up one earned run off one hit and walking three in 4.2 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Aminah Vega put the Blue Devils on the board in the opening frame with a sacrifice fly to score graduate student Deja Davis, who reached on an error.
- Vega added another Duke run via the long ball in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
- The Hokies responded in the bottom half with a solo home run off the bat of Jayme Bailey to cut the Blue Devils' edge in half, 2-1.
- Junior Francesca Frelick sparked the offense again in the final frame with a hard-hit double down the left field line. Frelick advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI-single up the middle from Davis.
- Gold's grand slam plated four additional runs to allow the Blue Devils to pull away for the 7-1 win.
NOTES
- Vega tallied her fifth home run of the year, including three in the last five games.
- Junior Lillie Walker earned her second save of the season after throwing 2.1 perfect innings, striking out two and walking one.
- Gold finished the day batting 1-for-2 with four RBI, one run and one walk.
- Gold tallied her second career grand slam after her first came against Georgia Tech on March 4, 2021.
UP NEXT
Duke and Virginia Tech conclude the three-game ACC series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The first game is slated for 12 p.m., and will be broadcast on ACC Network, while the second will follow at 2:30 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
