DURHAM – No. 10 Duke softball (40-8, 16-5 ACC) completed the series sweep over Georgia Tech (24-25, 6-15 ACC) after claiming a 6-2 win at Duke Softball Stadium on Sunday.
Freshman
Aminah Vega and sophomore
Ana Gold led the way offensively after finishing 2-for-3 and 1-for-2, respectively. The duo combined to drive in five of Duke's six runs via long balls in the third and fourth innings.
Junior pitcher
Jala Wright earned the win in the circle after tossing 5.0 innings against the Yellow Jackets while allowing one earned run off two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vega opened the scoring with an RBI-single to left field to score classmate D'Auna Jennings, who reached on a base hit up the middle, and gave Duke an early 1-0 lead.
- The Yellow Jackets tied the game 1-1 in the third using a deep sacrifice fly off the bat of Mallorie Black to score the baserunner from second.
- In her next at bat, Vega sent a two-run blast straight out to center to put the Blue Devils ahead, 3-1.
- Gold crushed a ball to left field to add three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth. The homer also scored graduate student Deja Davis and senior Gisele Tapia after they reached on an infield single and walk, respectively.
- Georgia Tech's Reese Hunter opened the final frame with a solo shot over the left field fence to round out the Yellow Jackets' scoring.
- Freshman Sophie Garner-MacKinnon sat down the final three batters to seal the Blue Devils' victory, 6-2.
NOTES
- The Blue Devils have won six of seven weekend conference series this season.
- Gold tallied her 18th home run of the year to set the program record for single-season home runs. The previous mark was held by Jameson Kavel who tallied 17 in 2022.
- Wright picked up her fourth straight win in the circle and improves to 12-4 on the season.
- Vega recorded her ninth home run and 11th multi-RBI game of the year.
- Jennings extended her hitting streak to a career-best 10 games after going 1-for-4 during the contest.
