The Duke University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to Wake Forest on Sunday in the NCAA title game at Kentner Field in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Blue Devils reached the title game for the second straight season but came up short in the program's quest for its first national championship.
After 25 minutes of back and forth action, Wake Forest opened the scoring with 9:13 remaining in the opening half when Tamar Meijer slipped a shot from the right wing under the pads of Blue Devil goalie Christy Morgan for a 1-0 lead. Kelly Wood assisted on the Demon Deacon goal.
Wake Forest kept pressure on over the next nine minutes but Morgan came up with a pair of saves and the Duke backs were able to clear a couple of loose balls in front of the cage, keeping the score at 1-0 heading into the half.
The Demon Deacons stretched their lead to two goals at the 39:10 mark of the contest with Meijer collecting a loose ball on the right side of the cage and pushing the shot into the back of the cage for her second goal of the game.
Wake Forest pushed its lead to 3-0 with 20:05 remaining in the contest as Kelly Wood scored her fifth goal of the season. Senior Kelly Dostal assisted on the play.
Duke earned its first corner of the game in the 51st minute of play, but Wake goalie Kristina Gagliardi stopped a shot by Hilary Linton. The Blue Devils had another penalty corner less than three minutes later by the Demon Deacon defense blocked one shot and Gagliardi saved another to keep the Blue Devils off the scoreboard.
Junior Nicole Dudek had a shot with the Wake goalie out of the cage with just over three minutes remaining in the game but Claire Laubach made a sliding defensive save to retain the shutout.
Sunday's shutout marked the first time the Blue Devils failed to score at least one goal in a game since head coach Beth Bozman took over the program. Bozman has guided Duke to a 38-9 record with two NCAA Championship game appearances during her two years with the Blue Devils.
Morgan finished the game with eight saves in goal for the Blue Devils, while Gagliardi stopped two shots for the Demon Deacons. Duke finishes the year 18-5 overall with the win total the second most in team history. Last year, Duke set the school record with 20 wins.
Sophomores Hilary Linton and Amy Stopford, along with junior Katie Grant and senior Gracie Sorbello all earned NCAA All-Tournament team honors.
