Julia Boehringer and junior
Kyle Massey provided the goals for Duke (4-2, 1-0) as the Blue Devils posted their second consecutive shutout. Stanford falls to 3-4 and 0-1 in league action.
How it Happened
- Duke, as it has done all season, got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Devils controlled much of the possession in the first 15 minutes and earned the game's first penalty corner in the 13th minute. Duke's shot on the first set piece was blocked, resulting in another set piece. This time, Maggie Kondrath inserted directly to Macy Szukics. The senior pushed the ball to her right where Boehringer was wide open for a shot inside the far post and a 1-0 lead.
- Stanford got into the game more in the second quarter, but Duke's defense remained steady. Chepow made her first save of the night just over a minute into the frame, batting down a baseline shot. The Blue Devils denied the ensuing corner and didn't allow another shot in the final 13:36 to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
- The Cardinal had its best chance of the night in the 39th minute, earning a penalty stroke. Scout Butler stepped up and pushed her shot wide right of the cage.
- Less than two minutes later, Duke doubled the score on a fabulous combination between Madison Beach and Massey. Beach shot-faked and beat her defender and then lifted the ball to Massey who knocked it out of the air and into the back of the cage.
- Duke withstood pressure from Stanford in the fourth quarter to record the shutout. The Blue Devils' defensive penalty corner unit was outstanding yet again and Chepow made a late save to collect her first career shutout.
- Stanford outshot Duke, 10-5, and held a slight 3-2 advantage in penalty corners. Daisy Ford made two saves for the Cardinal in goal.
Notes
- Julia Boehringer recorded her fifth goal of the season, giving her four more than she had in 20 games her rookie season.
- Madison Beach dished her fifth assist of the year to give her seven points on the year. She has an assist in three consecutive games and a point in every game Duke has scored a goal this season.
- Duke scored its eighth penalty corner goal of the season. The Blue Devils have converted on 30 percent of their set pieces this season (7-of-27).
- Kaiya Chepow matched her career high in saves with three stops. The shutout was the first of her career and Duke's second consecutive. Duke has not allowed a goal in 131:50.
