Sophomore attackman Matt Danowski scored three goals and handed out three assists to lead 13th-ranked Duke to a 12-10 win over visiting UMBC in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 on the year while the Retrievers fall to 0-1. Duke now leads the all-time series with UMBC, 14-3.
UMBC claimed a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest with goals by Drew Westervelt and Brendan Mundorf. Dan Flannery then spearheaded a 4-0 Duke run with two goals as the Blue Devils took a 4-2 advantage on Bret Thompson's tally from Ryan Marshall at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless action, Andy Gallagher found the back of the net for UMBC to cut the deficit in half, and Westervelt's goal with just one second remaining on the clock sent the teams into halftime tied, 4-4.
Duke took the lead for good three minutes into the third period when Danowski scored off a feed from Flannery. The Blue Devils pushed the lead to 8-4 as Marshall scored once and Zack Greer registered back-to-back goals at 3:11 and 2:28 of the quarter. Westervelt's unassisted goal with just under two minutes left closed UMBC to within 8-5 entering the final period.
Following Greer's third tally of the day, the Retrievers got consecutive goals from Gallagher and Mundorf to cut the margin to 9-7. Duke responded with three straight scores - two by Danowski - for a 12-7 advantage midway through the quarter. UMBC accounted for the final margin by scoring the final three goals including Westervelt's fourth of the afternoon with just over one minute left on the clock.
Greer finished the day with three goals and one assist while Flannery and Marshall chipped in two goals and one assist each. Brad Ross won 11-of-19 face-offs in the game while securing a team-high seven ground balls. Duke goalkeeper Aaron Fenton recorded 13 saves and registered the first assist of his career.
For UMBC, Westervelt picked up seven total points on four goals and three assists and Mundorf added three goals and one assist. Luke Reilly picked up a game-best eight grounders while goalkeeper Kevin Cepelak recorded 12 saves including five in the opening quarter.
Duke remains at home to entertain VMI on Tuesday at 3 p.m. while UMBC hosts Ohio State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
